After how many years can you have a relationship with a client?

Zero. In social work, you can never have a relationship with a client. Once a client, always a client.

What is the difference between crossing a boundary and violating a boundary.

Crossing a boundary is something that every social may do-examples of this include self disclosure or  giving a hug when a client initiates it. This does not violate our code of ethics.

Violating a boundary breaks the code of ethics. An example of this is having a relationship with a client.

What is the difference between the medical model and strengths based approach?

The medical model focuses on the problem and the professional is the expert.

The strengths based model focuses on a client's strengths and assumes the client is the expert in their own life. It acknowledges that every person has strengths that they carry with them.

What do you do if you see a client in public?

Do not acknowledge them unless they acknowledge you first. Even when they speak to you, try and limit any information relating to their case.

200

When do you start thinking about termination with a client?

The first time you meet them.

What is an exception in solution focused practice?

An exception in solution focused practice is when the social worker asks the client to think of a time when some part of their goal/miracle question has been a reality. Clients are asked to look at when things have gone a little better, and how they were able to achieve that. For example, if I client has recently relapsed and wants to be sober, instead of focusing on the relapse, ask them how they were able to get sober the first time. Honor their strength and ability to have that exception.

What do you do if someone you know seeks services at your agency.

Do not act as their primary social worker. Refer them to another social worker in your agency if their case has been assigned to you. If their case has not been assigned to you, let them know that you still must abide by confidentiality.

What are examples of verbal self disclosure and non verbal self disclosure?

What is the rule of thumb with self disclosure?

Verbal is disclosing you have children, are in a relationship, or maybe have been through something similar to what the client has been through.

Non verbal could be wearing a wedding band, having a visible tattoo, having pictures of loved ones in your office, etc.

The rule of thumb is that you should always think about why you are self disclosing, and weigh the harm  and benefits.

When scaling with a client, who defines the "one" and "ten?"

The client.

400

Is it okay to Google clients or search for them on social media.

In most cases, NO. It is unethical to Google or search for clients on social media. Social workers are able to do this under extenuating circumstances. An example of this would be if you were a DSS investigator.

400

Is it wrong to cry in front of a client?

It depends. There is no rule that says you can or cannot. It is okay to be teary eyed with a client if that is how you feel, but always be aware of the implications (good and bad)

400

How would you use scaling in solution focused practice-what would you say?

"On a scale of one to ten, one being where you were at when you first decided you needed to come see a social worker, and ten is (the client's miracle question summarized) where are you at on the scale right now?

When the client gives you a number, compliment them and ask them how they were able to be at that number. Then ask, "what would it take for you to move one point up on the scale, or even half a point?"

500

What are the limits of confidentiality?

1) Child abuse or neglect

2) Older adult abuse/abuse of a dependent adult

3) Threat of harm to self or someone else

4) Court ordered subpoena to testify or release records

500

Why is having boundaries and good self care so important in social work?

You have to take care of yourself in order to be a good social worker. You cannot help others if you are burnt out and stretched too thin.
