Unload the firearm.

During the air rifle unit ... what is the number one  rule of the air rifle unit?

Always point your muzzle in a safe direction.

100

How many deer are there in the state of Missouri today?

Around 1.4 million individual whitetail deer.

100

What type of organism is in the first trophic level of the energy pyramid?

Producers

You have an ammo-box full of shotgun shells. There are multiple sizes of shotshells in the ammo-box.

How do you decide which shotshell to use with your shotgun?

Match the ammo with the data stamp on the barrel of the firearm (usually by the receiver).

In both the archery and the air rifle unit, there were 3 lines taped to the floor. Please list the 3 lines.

Waiting line.

Shooting line.

Target line.

200

Why do bucks fight?

Bucks fight over receptive does. They are fighting for dominance of the herd.

200

If an organism eats producers, then this animal is a ____________________,

Consumer

200

If there are too many deer in an area, then what gender should be harvested to get the numbers down more effectively?

Female.

Every one female deer harvested is at least 2 less deer the following year (females give birth to 1-3 babies each spring).

300

Where does the money go from wildlife law violations?

To the county schools fund where the infraction was committed.

300

If you drop a pellet or an arrow while participating in shooting in the class, what should you do?

Raise your hand until the teacher comes over and replaces your projectile.

300

A deer gives birth to how many fawns?

What bucks tend to die young?

1-3 fawns are born, usually 1 or 2 (rarely 4)

Bucks with higher testosterone tend to die younger. They are floater bucks for the most part and work around fighting and breeding during rut.

300

What is another name for a top level predator?

Tertiary Consumer

300

List at least 3 methods that have been used in the modern conservation movement in order to help animals' populations rebound.

Trap and relocate (turkey)

Preservation (no hunting)

Habitat Reconstruction (wood duck)

Raise in captivity and release (trumpeter swan)

Regulated Hunting (deer)

400

A good hunt plan has what information (3 things)?

Who's going, where are you going, when will you be back.

More details are good, but these are the 3 main things that are needed to start a search party if needed.

400

If you shoot all 5 of your arrows in the yellow circles on the target ... then, what is the possible range of scores.

Your score will be 45 - 50 points.

400

Why are fawns born with white spots on their coat of fur?

What adaptation(s) allow fawns to lay on the ground and not be found by predators (other than camouflage)?

The white spots help the fawn blend in to the gound on the forest floor.

Fawns are almost scentless when the are born AND they can tuck their legs underneath them to make themselves about the size of a rugby ball.

400

How many trophic levels can an average energy pyramid support?

3-5, usually 4

400

If 3 days before the day after yesterday is Friday, then what day is 4 days after the day after tomorrow?

Sunday

500

What is the primary reason hunting and wildlife laws are passed and enforced?

To ensure wildlife populations for future generations.

500

What type of metal were the pellets made of that we shot during the air rifle unit?

Tin

500

Do deer have their antlers all year?

Explain the growth process.

No, deer start growing their antlers in early spring. The growth continues for about  6 months. There is "velvet" on the antlers, which brings blood to the antlers. Once blood supply drops, the deer will start rubbing their velvet off, getting ready for rut (fighting and breeding).

500

Why can an ecosystem only support a few trophic levels (hint ... where does the energy go)?

Most of the energy is lost to everyday life processes (mostly in the form of heat).

Only about 10% of the initial energy of an organism is passed to the next trophic level.

500

What were the 2 main causes of the plummet of so many wildlife populations in the 1800s (in the US)?

The main causes were habitat loss, market hunting & unregulated hunting.
