A field of science that studies health problems within populations
What is Epidemiology???
a disease which can be transmitted to humans from animals.
Zoonosis
coronavirus
pandemic
generally has a focus on specific risk factors for certain diseases
primary prevention
fomite
examines causal (etiologic) hypotheses regarding the Association between exposure variables and health outcome variables.
Analytic Epidemiology
no direct human-to-human contact.
Indirect transmission
a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time.
epidemic
involves the detection and treatment of pre-clinical changes.
secondary prevention
any agent which carries and transmits an infectious pathogen into another living organism
vector
aims to describe the distributions of diseases and determinants. It provides a way of organizing and analyzing these data to describe the variations in disease frequency among populations by geographical areas and over time.
Descriptive Epidemiology
is an indirect transmission process during which the pathogen is indirectly transferred from a reservoir, source or host to another host by inanimate intermediary vehicle objects.
Vehicle-borne transmission
an instance of a disease or problem.
Case definition
the site through which micro-organisms enter the susceptible host and cause disease/infection.
portal of entry
active carrier
sometimes referred to as the Epidemiologic Triad
Epidemiology triangle
a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
pathogen
often used for reporting purposes, so a case is reported to public health authorities for further investigation
Suspect case
care that can help you get back, keep, or improve abilities that you need for daily life.
rehabilitation
an individual who carries and is capable of passing on a genetic mutation associated with a disease and may or may not display disease symptoms.
carrier
One who harbors a pathogenic organism for a clinically significant time and is able to pass the infection to others.
Active carrier
show characteristics of both common source and propagated epidemics.
mixed epidemics
concerned with preventing the onset of disease; it aims to reduce the incidence of disease.
Primary prevention
belonging or native to a particular people or country.
endemic
the infectious agent, reservoir, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry, and susceptible host
Chain of infection
