What is characterization?
the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.
What is the setting of a story?
The time and place, and environment where a story happens
What is a plot?
the events that happen in a story.
What is conflict in a story?
the struggle between two forces in the story.
What is a theme?
a central topic, subject, or message within a narrative.
What is direct characterization?
when the narrator explicitly describes a character.
Knowing the setting is important because...
It helps you visualize the text.
It also allows you to form expectations about the story.
What is the exposition?
This usually occurs at the beginning of a story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. This section also presents other facts necessary to understanding the story
What is a flat character?
two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a book/movie/etc…
