What is the definition of Music Therapy?

Simple Definition (Therapist version):

The purpose of the music therapy is to improve upon and/or maintain physical, cognitive, social, and behavioral functioning through music interventions.


Clinical Definition (American Music Therapy Association):

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change.

The purpose of the recreation therapy is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning for any individual.


Clinical Definition (National Council for Therapeutics Recreation Certification (NCTRC)):

Recreational therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being.

The purpose of the RT process is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order to facilitate full participation in life. Services are provided or directly supervised by a “Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist” (CTRS).

Social Skills- Social skills are the skills we use everyday to interact and communicate with others. They include verbal and non-verbal communication, such as speech, gesture, facial expression and body language.

What education does a Board Certified Music Therapist have to have?

Simple Definition (Therapist version):

Bachelors degree,  continuing education hours, recertify every five years, pass board certification exam.


Clinical Definition (American Music Therapy Association):

Music therapists start by earning an undergraduate degree in music therapy. As part of the degree, music therapy students complete 1,200 hours of clinical training with a variety of populations, and then complete at least 1,040 hours of a specialized internship. After graduating, they take and pass a certification exam to earn the credentials necessary to practice professionally (MT-BC). In order to advance within the field, music therapists must continue professional development in the forms of clinical supervision, continuing-education credits, and advanced certifications.

What education does a Board Certified Art Therapist have to have?

Simple Definition (Therapist version):

Masters level program in Art Therapy, Pass national board exam, recertify every five years, continuing education hours 


Clinical Definition (American Art Therapy Association):

Art Therapists must graduate from a master’s level program in Art Therapy, with preparatory courses in studio art and psychology. They must also complete 100 hours of supervised practicum, and 600 hours of an art therapy clinical internship. To go on to become a Registered Art Therapist (ATR), they will also need to complete 1000 hours of direct client contact and fill out application. They will then sit for an exam to become board certified, to gain the highest credential of ATR-BC. To maintain the credential, art therapists have annual fees and must recertify every five years with approved continuing education hours.

What education does a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) have to have?

Simple Definition (Therapist version):

Pass the NCTRC exam, and a bachelors or higher in recreation therapy, continuing education credits, recertify every 5 years


Clinical Definition (American Therapeutic Recreation Association(ATRA)):

Recreational therapists need a bachelor’s degree, usually in recreational therapy or a related field such as recreation and leisure studies with an emphasis or concentration in recreational therapy/therapeutic recreation. A qualified recreational therapist is someone who is nationally certified as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), usually referred to as Recreational Therapists. Qualified professionals are certified through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), which requires a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university, a formal internship and the passing of a national certification examination. A CTRS must maintain their credential every five years through the NCTRC recertification process.
