Define deserts.

Deserts are drylands having scanty or no rainfall and very little vegetation. A place which receives less than 25 centimeter of rainfall in a year is classified as a desert.

State any two adaptations that help plants to survive in the desert climate.

  • Long roots that go deep into the ground in search of water.

  • Leathery leaves with waxy coating to prevent water loss due to evaporation.

  • Fleshy stems to store water and thorns to protect these stems.

What are nocturnal animals?

  • Most desert animals rest during the day to avoid the heat.

  • They come out to eat and hunt only at night. They are called nocturnal animals.

Why are deserts  also known as subtropical deserts?

Most of the hot deserts are located between

15°N and 35°S of the Equator (0°). Since the hot deserts lie near the Tropic of Cancer(23 1/2°N) and the Tropic of Capricorn(23 1/2°S), so they are also known as subtropical deserts.

Name some desert tribes.

  • Tuaregs in Sahara Desert

  • Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert

  • Bedouins in Africa and Arabia Deserts

  • American Indians in the Patagonia Desert

  • Banjaras in the Thar Desert

Describe the hot desert climate.

  • Deserts experience extreme climate as they are arid, little or no rainfall and very low humidity.

  • Hot deserts are very hot, sunny and dry throughout the year, temperature varies greatly.

  • The day temperature - between 40 degree C to 45 degrees C, while the night temperatures can drop to about 5 degree C.

  • In winter, the night temperatures can even go below 0 degrees Celsius.

500

Describe the cold desert climate.

  • The cold deserts can have very hot and dry climate in the summer but during winter, the temperatures are freezing. Cold desert frequently experience snow.

  • The average summer temperature is 21 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius and during winters, it is 2 degree C to 4 degrees C.

  • There are cold desert regions in India in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim.

What is desertification

Some deserts are spreading very fast.

This process is known as desertification.

It is caused by overgrazing, deforestation, over cultivation and poor irrigation.

Desertification causes fertile land to change to non -productive waste lands.

This is harmful to our ecosystem.
