A mature tree can have a dry mass of 1 ton or more (after removing all water), yet it starts from a seed that weighs less than 1 gram

Which of the following contributes the MOST MASS to this huge increase in biomass?

*****************************************************************

A. Absorption of sunlight energy into green leaves.

B. Incorporation of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into molecules by green leaves.

C. Absorption of organic substances from the soil via roots.

D. Absorption of mineral substances from the soil via roots

E. Incorporation of water from the soil into molecules by green leaves.

The process of photosynthesis requires water. This is also used for oxygen and glucose which get released into the air. sunlight has no mass and plants have only a little bit of mineral substance and don't absorb organic substances. It is well known that CO2 contributes to a huge increase in biomass due to many factors such as the burning of fossil fuels.

 AGREE or DISAGREE for each?

Then also provide a detailed explanation describing what about the statement is scientifically accurate or not accurate.

a. “Minerals contribute some of the dry biomass of the tree.”

b. “Plants absorb organic substances from the soil, in addition to doing photosynthesis to make their own food.”

c. “Water from the soil does not contribute any mass to the dry biomass of the tree.”

A. “Minerals contribute some of the dry biomass of the tree.”

I agree although CO2 is the biggest contributor, minerals also contribute to the dry biomass of the tree in order to make different molecules. Also, minerals from the soil contribute to the dry mass of the tree. Also, Van Helmont's experiment shows how the tree gained wight and it wasn't from the loss of soil

B. “Plants absorb organic substances from the soil, in addition to doing photosynthesis to make their own food.”

I disagree because trees don't take organic molecules from the soil. Plants make their own food from the process of photosynthesis. Plants don't gain food from their soil. The dry biomass comes from glucose from the process of photosynthesis.

C. “Water from the soil does not contribute any mass to the dry biomass of the tree.”

I disagree with this because water does contribute to the dry mass in photosynthesis creating glucose. The hydrogen in glucose comes from the water that was in the tree.

Then also provide a detailed explanation describing what about the statement is scientifically accurate or not accurate.

a. “DNA turns into RNA, and then RNA polymerase builds proteins.”

b. “During mitosis in human cells, DNA is copied once to produce two diploid cells. During meiosis, DNA is copied once to produce four haploid cells.”

c. “Photosynthesis is the plant form of cellular respiration, which produces oxygen gas instead of carbon dioxide gas.”

A.. “DNA turns into RNA, and then RNA polymerase builds proteins.”

I disagree with this statement because DNA builds RNA from RNA polymerase. after that, the RNA goes through translation producing protein from ribosomes

B. “During mitosis in human cells, DNA is copied once to produce two diploid cells. During meiosis, DNA is copied once to produce four haploid cells.”

I agree with this statement because it is true. DNA is copied once producing two diploid cells, unlike meiosis where it produces four haploid cells.

C. “Photosynthesis is the plant form of cellular respiration, which produces oxygen gas instead of carbon dioxide gas.”

I disagree with the last statement because plants have the ability to photosynthesize and do cellular respiration they just need to meet their needs like sunlight for photosynthesis. In photosynthesis, sunlight is acquired and stored as chemical energy building CO2 from sugars which is later on released as O2 in the process of cellular respiration.
