What are the three states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, and Gas
All scientists start with a _________.
All engineers start with a _________.
All scientists start with a question.
All engineers start with a problem.
What is the main source of energy found in almost all ecosystems?
Sun
If 2 chairs were made from the same wood. What is one property that would be the exact same?
A. Height
B. Shape
C. Weight
D. Hardness
Hardness
What is needed for a solid to turn into a liquid?
Heat
Where is Earth's gravitational force pulling us towards? (Hint: it's not "the ground")
Earth's center/Earth's core
Which of the following would absorb the greatest amount of sunlight? Aluminum foil, cotton balls, black paper, or a white sweater?
Black paper
Is combining a banana, yogurt, strawberries, and milk into a blender to make a smoothie an example of a physical or chemical change?
Physical change, because although the form of the ingredients is different, no new substance was created. It is still just a banana, yogurt, strawberries, and milk.
Which state of matter has molecules that are tightly packed together?
Solid
What is it called when a plant makes its own food?
Photosynthesis
Why is reproduction an important part of an animal's life cycle?
If an animal did not reproduce it would eventually go extinct.
Which type of rock would you most likely find near a volcano? Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic?
Igneous
What 3 things does a plant need in order to complete photosynthesis?
Air (carbon dioxide), water, sunlight
If a chemical reaction takes place inside a closed system, will the mass be more, less, or the same than it was before the reaction?
The same, because the conservation of matter states matter cannot be created nor destroyed.
Is a scar on your arm an inherited trait?
No - inherited traits are passed down from your parents.
How do you know if a chemical reaction occurred?
A new substance with new chemical makeup was formed.
If I dissolve 25 grams of sugar in 50 grams of water in a cup so you can no longer see the sugar, how many grams does the water weigh AND why?
75 grams because even though you cannot see the sugar, it is still there.
Overtime, an animal's features can adapt and change such as a bird's beak becoming longer and thinner. What is the purpose of animals adapting?
Animals adapt in order to survive in their environments.
What is the difference between a conductor and an insulator?
A conductor allows electrons (electricity) to pass through. An insulator does not allow electrons (electricity) to pass through.
Name one example of a physical change and one example of a chemical change.
Physical examples: can crushing, painting a picture, ripping up paper, slicing bread
Chemical examples: firewood burning, baking a cake, fireworks, using a battery
Describe the water cycle using the terms evaporation, precipitation, and condensation.
Precipitation is any form of water falling from the sky. If it rained, the water would go into the ground and stay there until temperatures rise which causes the water to evaporate to water vapor. Once in the sky, the vapor goes through condensation in the clouds until it eventually precipitates again.
What is the difference between a producer, consumer, and decomposer?
A producer is an organism that makes its own food. A consumer is an organism that relies on other consumers or producers to get its food. A decomposer is an organism that breaks down dead organisms for nutrients.
Describe 2 examples of an energy transfer
Possible answers: a lamp gets plugged in (electrical energy) to turn on a light (light energy and thermal energy), an alarm clock is plugged in (electrical energy) and rings (sound energy), and apple is eaten (chemical energy) and the child runs around (mechanical/kinetic energy)
How does water travel through a plant? Explain using 3 parts of the plant.
Water begins in the roots of the tree and begins to travel up the stem of the plant. From there, it goes to the leaves.
A. Why do people on Earth experience day and night?
B. Why do people on Earth experience seasons?
A. The Earth rotates in space causing each part of it to face the sun and the moon.
B. The Earth tilts forward (getting direct sunlight) and backwards (getting indirect sunlight)
