How should you safely prepare raw meat when cooking?

Preparing raw meats in a separate area from foods that will not be cooked (RTE foods) will eliminate any possibility of cross-contamination. This means that raw meat should never be prepared next to salads, and should ideally have completely separate areas, or at the very least, the tables and equipment should be cleaned and sanitized between use. You should also wash your hands after handling raw meat.

This summer, the Taliban seized Kabul and over threw the government in Afghanistan. This is especially a concern for women trapped there because...

In 1996, when the Talibaan had last claimed power, they forced the women of the land to abide by strict rules that were in accordance to "Sharia law". Some of these laws include:

  • Women should not appear in the streets without a blood relative or without wearing a burqa.
  • Women should not wear high-heeled shoes as no man should hear a woman's footsteps lest it excite him.
  • Women must not speak loudly in public as no stranger should hear a woman's voice.
  • All ground and first-floor residential windows should be painted over or screened to prevent women from being visible from the street.
  • Photographing, filming and displaying pictures of females in newspapers, books, shops or the home was banned.
  • The modification of any place names that included the word "women". For example, "women's garden" was renamed "spring garden".
  • Women were forbidden to appear on the balconies of their apartments or houses.
  • Ban on women's presence on radio, television or at public gatherings of any kind.
  • After the age of 8, a female was not permitted to continue her studies
  • A woman was not permitted to work
  • From the age of eight onward, girls in Afghanistan were not allowed to be in direct contact with males other than a close "blood relative", husband, or in-law

Explain the context behind the revelation of Surah Kafiroon

In an attempt to stop the Holy Prophet (sa) from carrying out his mission, the Quraish tried to strike a bargain with him, telling him that they could live together in peace if both parties worshipped eachother's god(s) in addition to their own (i.e the Quraish wanted the Holy Prophet (sa) to partake in idol worship in addition to worshipping Allah, and they said they would do the same). In response to this, Allah sent down Surah Al-Kafiroon in which Allah instructs the Holy Prophet (sa) to say:

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.

Say 'O Ye disbelievers'!

I worship not as you worship;

Nor do you worship as I worship

Nor do I worship that which you worship

Nor do you worship Him Whom I worship

For you your religion and for me my religion   (109:1-7)

In 1999, Huzur (aba) faced imprisonment in Pakistan. How long was he imprisoned and for what?

In 1999, a resolution was presented in the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab which demanded that the name of Rabwah be changed because that name appeared in the Qur'an. The resolution passed without much debate and the name of Rabwah was officially changed to Chenab Nagar. Signage was placed in prominent parts of Rabwah which bore the new name. A few days later, a First Information Report (criminal complaint) was filed accusing certain members of the Community of erasing a sign which bore the new name. Though the complaint didn't mention any names, a case was registered, resulting in the arrest of Masroor Ahmad and a few other senior members of the Ahmadiyya Community. They were imprisoned for 11 days without bail, but were released without charge on 10 May 1999.

In 2010, plans were being made to build a 13-story Muslim community center located two blocks from the World Trade Center site. Although the building would not be visible from the World Trade Center site, opponents of the project said that establishing a mosque so close to Ground Zero would be offensive since the hijackers in the 11 September 2001 attacks were Islamic terrorists. How did Huzur (aba) respond to this controversy?

He said: "If a mosque is built at the proposed site, then the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community would like to see churches, synagogues, Hindu places of worship and places of worship of all other religions also built near Ground Zero. That would be a good example of how from an act of evil and terror has emerged unity and peace."
