What are the THREE main layers based on COMPOSITION?

Crust, Mantle, Core

100

What layers make up the Lithosphere?

Upper mantle and Crust

Alfred Wegner looked at a map and saw this... Which started his theory of plate tectonics.

The shapes of the continents looked like they fit together like a puzzle.

In the early 1900's, geologist Alfred Wegner described a process he called continental drift. He proposed that Earth's continents had once been a single landmass that had broken up, and the continents had then moved apart. At first, scientists were skeptical, but they accepted  Wegner's idea when new discoveries supported it. Which term describes continental drift?

Why does density increase the deeper we go inside of Earth?

The heavier materials were brought closer to the core by the gravity of Earth.

The pressure within Earth increases causing more mass to compress into a smaller volume.

200

The lithosphere can be separated into two parts, what are they?

Continental and Oceanic Crust

Wegner believed that evidence on the continents could help cement his theory of continental drift. What is the theory of continental drift?

The theory that the continents have moved all around the Earth over its history.

What represents Erath's heat source?

The core

300

The lithosphere is all cracked up into...

Tectonic Plates

300

How did Wegner use fossils of plants and animals to help prove that the continents were moving.

Fossils of the same animal were found all around the world in different climates.

How did Wegner use rocks and mountains to help prove continental drift?

The rocks within the mountains matched in age and type to other mountains around the world.

400

Why do most volcanoes form near the coasts?

The coast is where oceanic plate subducts under continental plates.

400

What is the Test Variable (Independent Variable) in the sentence below?

"If the wind blows, then the kite will fly."

The wind

500

Why is the Outer Core liquid and the Inner Core solid?

The heat overtakes the pressure in the outer core and causes the layer to be in liquid form.

The pressure overtakes the heat within the inner core causing the inner core to remain solid.

Scientist 50 years ago didn't know what was moving the lithosphere. Today we have a good idea as to what force could be strong enough to move such a large layer. Describe this force.

Convection within the Asthenosphere.

500

Why was Wegners theory of Continental drift not accepted?

He did not have an explanation for what was causing the plates to move.

500

Why do 2 continental plates form a mountain when they converge?

Because they are the same density.

500

What is the Dependent Variable in the sentence below:

"The higher i drop the ball, the higher the ball will bounce."

The height the ball bounces.
