This species, when compared to it's ancestors, is smaller, and certain aspects of its anatomy appear simpler. It also appears to have a more restricted distribution, being confined to the river systems of eastern Australia.

One of the fossils found from Australian deposits was the opalised jaw fragment of this prehistoric species of monotreme, which is 110 million years old and one of the country’s oldest mammals.
