How did the conflict over the region of Kashmir start?

During the Partition of British India, the ruler in Kashmir was Hindu, while the majority of the population was Muslim. As such, the ruler chose to not accede to either side. When Pakistan suspected the Hindu ruler might accede to India, a rebellion in Kashmir began against the ruler. As such, the ruler called on India to assist in quelling the rebellion, and in exchange he would accede to India.
