Why Does the Bride Wear a Veil?

The wedding veil hides the brideโ€™s beauty and wards off evil spirits. Another explanation is that during the times of arranged marriages the brideโ€™s face would be covered until the groom had committed to the marriage. Oh, and after your wedding, donโ€™t let your friend try on your veil! Itโ€™s supposed to mean sheโ€™ll run off with your partner, and we canโ€™t be having that.

Why are wedding dresses white?

It was Queen Victoria who was the first to do so, as before her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840. Before that royal wedding gowns were typically red. Victoria's choice of a white dress was frowned upon by English aristocrats because white traditionally symbolized mourning. White now symbolizes purity.

Why does the bride carry a bouquet?

Ancient Greeks and Romans, and Egyptians, carried fragrant herbs and spices to ward off bad luck during weddings. The flowers symbolized a new beginning and brought hopes of fertility, happiness, and fidelity.

This is also why flower girls sprinkle pedals down the aisle, creating a safe pathway for the bride to her groom.

What Does โ€œSomething Old, Something New, Something Borrowed & Something Blueโ€ Mean?

โ€œSomething old, something new, something borrowed and something blueโ€ is an age-old Victorian rhyme.

Something old represents the link with the brideโ€™s family and the past.

Something new represents good fortune and success in the brideโ€™s new life.

Something borrowed reminds the bride that her family and friends will be there for her when help is needed.

Something blue symbolizes faithfulness and loyalty. The tradition dates back to biblical times when blue represented purity.
