Titanic

On April 10, 1912 the “Unsinkable Ship’” set sail from England headed to New York. The giant ship was a dream for many. But disaster struck on the night of April 14th. It was a cold, clear night when the Titanic hit an iceberg! Freezing cold water poured in the ship. There was nothing anyone could do. The ship that was called the ship of dreams sunk three hours later. More than 1,500 people died. It was a tragedy the world will never forget.

The world was at war! In the year of 1941 World War II was being fought in Europe, but America was not a part of it. That all changed on December 7th, 1941. The people in Hawaii were taken by complete surprise when Japanese airplanes dropped bombs on Pearl Harbor. The very next day America joined the war! Later in the war the U.S. dropped two huge bombs in Japan, that helped end the war. But America will always remember Pearl Harbor and the American lives lost there.

California Gold Rush

Gold! James Marshall first struck gold in California at Sutter’s Hill in 1848. James was building a sawmill when he found shiny gold flakes in the river. What followed was huge! People began pouring into California on the hunt for gold. Nearly 80,000 people came to the state in one year. They were called the 49ers. After all the people came boomtowns sprung up while they were looking for gold. When all the gold was found people moved onto the next place and the town was left empty. Ghost towns were created. Now people are able to visit the cities created from boomtowns or the remains of the ghost towns. The Gold Rush is a huge part of California’s history.

It’s been called the Most Wonderful Place on Earth. What is this place? Disneyland! Walt Disney is the creator of Disneyland. He first got the idea for the park in the 1930s when he went to many theme parks with his daughter. He wanted to build a tourist park next to his studio, but he didn’t have enough room. So in 1953 Walt bought 160 acres in Anaheim, California. Then he started building the park in 1954. Later, the park was finished in 1955. Disneyland has had many changes. Star Wars, California Adventures, and other parts were added too. Disneyland has made more money than any other park. Now, in 2018, the park will celebrate its 63rd birthday.

Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is in Montana and Canada. It has beautiful mountains, and sparkling clear rivers and lakes. Glacier was first made a national park in 1910. Many hotels were added later. The famous Going-To-The-Sun-Road was finished in 1932. This road travels over the mountains and gives people a view like any other. Along with the mountains, the park has lots of wildlife, like grizzly bears, mountain goats and big horn sheep. Also in 1932 the park was named a Peace Park because it is in Canada and America. Many people visit the park every year. In 2017, the park broke a record with nearly 2 million visitors. Glacier Park will always be the crown of America.
