Ponyboy enjoys going to the movies alone because he can watch movies without being disturbed, so he can get into the movie and live the movie with the actors. When he sees a movie with someone it's kind of uncomfortable for him, it's like having someone read your book over your shoulder.

Darry has to take on the role of a father figure to both Ponyboy and SodaPop, his brothers. Darry comes across as harsh and cruel to Ponyboy because he has high expectations for him. He knows he's intelligent and can someday make something of himself and live a better life.

I think what Ponyboy means by this quote is that Johnny needs the gang for support, to feel like he has a family system, which he would not otherwise have because his parents do not care for him the way that they should. They are together because they are all "outsiders." They find togetherness and are bound by the fact that they would otherwise be alone if it were not for one another.
What does Cherry mean when she says, THINGS ARE ROUGH ALL OVER". (pg. 35)
Cherry means that everyone has issues and problems regardless of their gang affiliation, social group, or amount of money they have. She even tells Ponyboy the Socs have 'troubles you've never even heard of.
