Shirley Chisholm was a groundbreaking politician in many ways. As a Black woman, she faced many barriers to success. She fought through them, determined to do her best to make the United States a better place.

Early Political Career

Chisholm began her life in politics by working on other people's campaigns. She worked hard to help elect Black men to office. She also volunteered in local political organizations. Chisholm encouraged the groups to reach out to women and Black voters.

In 1964, Chisholm decided to run for office herself. She was elected as a member of the New York State Assembly. She served in the state legislature for three years. In 1968, however, she decided to aim higher.
