Shirley Chisholm was a groundbreaking politician in many ways. As a Black woman, she faced many barriers to success. She fought through them, determined to do her best to make the United States a better place.
Early Political Career
Chisholm began her life in politics by working on other people's campaigns. She worked hard to help elect Black men to office. She also volunteered in local political organizations. Chisholm encouraged the groups to reach out to women and Black voters.

A First in Congress
Chisholm ran to represent New York in the House of Representatives. She wanted to serve in the federal government. She won, becoming the first Black woman in Congress. Every person on her staff was a woman, and half of them were Black. She wanted to help more women and people of color get into politics.
Presidential Dreams
In 1972, Chisholm declared that she would run for president of the United States. She was the first Black woman to seek the nomination of either major political party (the Democrats or the Republicans). Chisholm did not win the Democratic nomination. However, she was the first woman to participate in a presidential debate. Her ambition paved the way for the six women who participated in the 2020 Democratic primary.
