What is "catfishing"?
Pretending to be someone you're not online to trick people, typically to receive money, false identity, and/or attention. Can include using fake pictures, name, location and implementing manipulation and control over others
Where can you meet friends online?
Social media (facebook), video gaming chats, interest-based group forums, dating sites, etc.
Signs of a safe, secure website?
starts with https (s=secure), ends with .org or .com, doesn't have spam ads popping up directing to other sites or downloads
Name some things you could safely post online:
hobbies, interests, accomplishments, accurate/appropriate pictures, favorite things, etc
Signs someone may be an online predator?
Asks for your personal identification or financial information, asks for inappropriate pictures, answers immediately, doesn't reply with personable or specific responses, and makes unreasonable demands about the way you communicate with them
Positives about making online friendships?
Not restricted to close, in-person location (widens your social circle), connection anywhere/anytime (no transportation required), can build friendships based on specific interests/goals, some feel more space and time to give thoughtful responses without the social anxieties/pressure, etc
Signs of an unsecure, unsafe webiste?
URL begins with something other than https, ends in something other than .org or .com, has many spam ads popping up, requires entry of payment or personal identification information
What setting should your facebook sharing be on to ensure privacy?
only friends can see your posts (not public, or friends of friends)
Signs your account, or the account of a friend, may be "hacked"?
Receiving duplicate friend requests, messages sent with links and suspicious messages (do not accept the request or click on the link!)
Negatives about making online friendships?
can’t rely on non-verbal communication cues such as body language or physical touch, potential for deceitful identities, cyberbullying, and tech issues, possibility of feeling less personable
Ways to keep your account secure?
Don't accept friend requests from people you don't know or open messages from unknown people, don't share your log-in info, don't click on download links, block any accounts that seem suspicious, keep your posts set to private, consider two-step verification log ins and anti-virus security
