You may think you will have just one drink. Playing the tape through means thinking about what will really happen, how does this usually play out? How did it end up when you were using before? What were the consequences? How did your life look?

Anything to do with getting or using drugs/alcohol.
This could be calling your dealer, driving to the liquor store, purchasing the drugs or alcohol, and using them.

In emotional relapse you are not thinking about using, but your feelings and behaviours are setting you up for relapse. In mental relapse, a war is starting in your head, to use or not to use, that is the question

What to do: become aware, practice selfcare, look to safety/discharge plan, reach out for help, Use coping strategies/grounding techniques

What to do: play the tape through, talk to someone, distract yourself, take it one day at a time, self care, mindfulness, do something I enjoy
Even if you do not physically relapse but you are in this stage why do we call it abstinence, not recovery?
Abstinence is sometimes referred to as "White knuckling it", it means you stay sober but it is a constant battle, and you are destined to burn out at some time. Recovery involves dealing with your emotions, urges, and triggers properly so that you can still enjoy life.
