Even though slavery was over, African Americans were subject to laws that restricted their freedom

A positive thing happening in a country that causes people to move/immigrate there

There was a big gap between the rich and the poor. Many people protested and went on strike to get higher wages and better working conditions

To make up for a wrong one has done, by paying money to or helping those who have been wronged
What are reparations?
A system that came about after slavery, where freedmen had to share part of their crops with a landowner. This kept them in debt to the landowner and they could not leave until they paid their debt.

A negative thing that occurs in someone's country and causes them to leave
