Explain the Law of Superposition.
The law of superposition is a principle that states that younger rocks lie on top of older rocks in undisturbed sequences. This means that if rock layers are not disturbed that the rocks on top will be younger than the ones below them.
What do the boundaries in the Geologic Time Scale represent?
The boundaries in the geologic time scale represent major changes on earth such as appearance or disappearance of organisms dramatic shift in the climate or change in the composition of rocks
What is the difference between absolute and relative dating?
Relative dating is determining whether an object is younger or older than other objects or events by comparing it to other rocks around it. while absolute dating is getting the exact age with scientific methods
In a paragraph explain the following: The Phanerozoic Eon consists of 3 eras; Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic. Explain what each name means and describe the type of organisms that inhabited Earth during each era.
In this question explain the Paleozoic era
The Paleozoic era means “old life” and in the beginning of the era there were no land organisms but in the middle of this era there were plants and by the end of the era there were amphibians and insects.
name the type of plate boundary shown here and a specific location on earth (sorry I couldn't insert pictures so I had to do this crudely l=fault line)
<---l--->
type: divergent
location mid Atlantic ridge
What force of nature is responsible for continental drift? Explain
sea floor spreading, where magma rises up at a divergent plate the magma rises, hardens, and pushes the continents apart
What are the differences between the crust, mantle and core?
The differences between the crust mantle and core are, the crust is thin, the outermost layer (1%), and made of oceanic and continental crust. The mantle is very thick and is in the middle (66%). and the core is in the center and is very hot and dense (33%).
How does SONAR work?
SONAR works by sending our sound waves and measuring how long it takes for the sound to come back to you to measure the landscape underwater to map the ocean floor the data then creates a bathymetric profile of the ocean floor
In a paragraph explain the following: The Phanerozoic Eon consists of 3 eras; Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic. Explain what each name means and describe the type of organisms that inhabited Earth during each era.
In this question explain the Mesozoic era
the Mesozoic era means middle life and it was the age of reptiles/dinosaurs, about 50% of which became extinct
name the type of plate boundary shown here and a specific location on earth (sorry I couldn't insert pictures so I had to do this crudely, fault line is between the two arrows)

v l
type: transform
location San Andres fault
What are ocean trenches?
Ocean trenches are deep narrow crevices along the convergent boundaries in ocean floor, they are the deepest parts of the ocean floor can be up to four kilometers deeper than the ocean floor
What plate motion and earthquake characteristics are associated with strike-slip faults, reverse faults and normal faults?
strike slip faults are horizontal and are usually moderate and shallow. reverse faults are usually diagonally and strong, deep. Finally, a normal fault is vertically and is both weak and shallow.
transform: strike slip (horizontal) moderate and shallow
convergent: reverse fault (diagonal) strong deep
divergent: normal fault (vertical) week shallow
What is the difference between a non-explosive and an explosive volcano?
the difference between a non explosive volcano and an explosive volcano is a non explosive volcano flows down the side of a volcano and an explosive volcano shots out clouds of hot debris and gasses, molten rock hardens in the air because of heat and pressure
In a paragraph explain the following: The Phanerozoic Eon consists of 3 eras; Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic. Explain what each name means and describe the type of organisms that inhabited Earth during each era.
In this question explain the Cenozoic era
the Cenozoic era, which means recent life, the one we are in now, is the age of mammals and some are now extinct like the woolly mammoth, saber tooth cats, and giant sloths.
name the type of plate boundary shown here and a specific location on earth (sorry I couldn't insert pictures so I had to do this crudely plate b is bending under plate a)
