Roman crucifixion was long and torturous. But the Jewish leaders didn't want to violate the laws of Passover. So, the Roman soldiers did this to move things along, and make sure Jesus was dead by sundown.

Before going to Pilate, the religious ruling body took Jesus to this man to stand trial according to Jewish law.

Roman crucifixion often humiliated the criminals and put their name over their naked body as they hung publicly to die. In Jesus' case, Pilate had this title placed on His cross.

Crucifixion of Jesus
This manner of death was reserved for the poorest class of people, usually slaves, and produced the most amount of pain and suffering. Victims were first humiliated, then tortured.

In Jesus' case, they also ran him through with a spear, to make sure he was dead by sunset.
Jewish rules for Passover required that no dead bodies were to be left exposed. So this man - a convert of Jesus' - took Jesus' body and buried it in his tomb before sundown, so that Passover was observed.
