This manner of death was reserved for the poorest class of people, usually slaves, and produced the most amount of pain and suffering. Victims were first humiliated, then tortured.

In Jesus' case, they also ran him through with a spear, to make sure he was dead by sunset.

Jewish rules for Passover required that no dead bodies were to be left exposed. So this man - a convert of Jesus' - took Jesus' body and buried it in his tomb before sundown, so that Passover was observed.
