TRUE OR FALSE

Babysitters should arrive to the families house a few minutes earlier than requested.

TRUE

This gives you time to get additional information or instructions from the parents. It also lets the children see the transition of authority take place as the parents hand the responsibility of caring for them over to the sitter.

Of course, being late is never acceptable.

TRUE OR FALSE

When you are babysitting it is ok to answer the door for amazon delivery packages?

FALSE

As the caregiver of young children, sitters can't ignore that potential danger.

So, they must never open the door to strangers - not even for delivery people or service representatives.

Delivery people can leave their package at the door while service representatives should already have an appointment and arrive when the parents are home.

WHAT ARE 2 THINGS YOU WANT TO ASK THE PARENTS BEFORE THEY LEAVE?

Important names, phone numbers, times of departure, and arrival, location of first-aid supplies and special medication for the children; the location of temperature controls and food; what and when the children may eat; rules regarding homework and playtime; bedtime routines; and special instructions for diapering, bathing, or simply handling a baby.

200

If a family asks you to babysit, list 2 "interview questions" you would ask the family?

Interviewing families is the best way to find out if you are the right one for the job.

In every interview sitters should meet the children and listen to the job details and expectations.

Other questions to ask:

Dates

Transportation

Number of children

Ages of children

Additional responsibilities

House rules

TRUE OR FALSE

If you are bottle feeding a baby, it is ok to let them eat as much as they want any time of the day?

FALSE

Sitters should follow the parent's instructions that should detail when to feed the baby and how much food to give.

One important rule to keep in mind when bottle-feeding is to avoid heating formula or breast milk in the microwave. Microwaves can create hot spots.

Bottles should be warmed to a lukewarm temperature instead by running it under warm faucet water or placing it in a pot or bowl of hot water. Sitters can test a bottle's temperature by dripping a small amount of the liquid onto the inside of the wrist. (Do not let the nipple touch the wrist to avoid the spread of germs.) If it feels too hot on the wrist, it's way too hot for a baby!

Another rule is to hold the baby during feeding instead of propping the bottle on a pillow. To avoid choking accidents, babies should never be put to bed with a bottle.

When finished, a baby needs to be burped, which is a simple matter of placing them over the sitter's shoulder and gently patting the baby's back. The baby can then burp out excess food onto a cloth laid atop the sitter's shoulder.

TRUE OR FALSE

When you are cooking, children should stay at least 3 feet away from the stove or hot food?

TRUE

Also, never let children climb on stoves or cooking surfaces, never leave items in or on the stove unattended, and never hold a child while cooking at the stove or while opening and retrieving items from the oven.

Children who approach the stove should be stopped and moved to a safer area while the sitter is cooking. They can be distracted with a game or toy so that they become interested in a different activity.

LIST 3 THINGS THE PARENTS WILL EXPECT YOU TO DO WHILE YOU ARE BABYSITTING?

Feeding the children, washing the dishes, playing games, doing a craft, reading a book, getting them ready for bed...

Before the parents leave, discuss a list of things that should be accomplished while the parents are away.

Between those tasks is time to play games and do crafts or other fun activities planned.

When the time that the parents return approaches, sitters usually spend a few minutes cleaning up after the children.

300

List 3 important phone numbers you need to have with you when babysitting.

The sitter has to have important information ready and know where to find it quickly since it could save a life. This information essentially allows them to be prepared in a variety of situations.

  • Emergency medical services
  • Police
  • Fire
  • National poison control center
  • Hospital

TRUE OR FALSE

When picking up an infant, it is ok to place both hands under their armpits and then pick up?

FALSE

When picking up an infant, the sitter should first slide one hand under the baby's head and neck and slide the other hand under the baby's hip and back. Both hands are then lifted while slowly bringing the baby close to the chest and slightly propping the baby's body up at an angle to face the sitter.

300

List 2 things you can do to prevent the spreading of germs.

Staying healthy is another important aspect of babysitting because it reduces illness in children.

Cover the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue or into the inside of the elbow or upper arm.

Both children and sitter should wash their hands before and after eating; after toileting or diapering; and after coughing, sneezing or blowing the nose.

Sitters should additionally wash their hands after handling first aid equipment.

400

TRUE OR FALSE

Once the parents return home you should gather your things and walk out the door.

FALSE

Once the parents return, you should allow them to and settle in a bit, they'll typically ask how everything went. This is where sitters report what went well and what did not. They also thank the family for their business and usually collect the payment.

400

List 3 things you should bring in your First Aid Kit.

Every first aid kit should include the following:

  • A cold pack
  • A mobile phone
  • A notepad
  • A pen or pencil
  • A small, battery-powered flashlight
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizers (for when soap and water are not available)
  • Adhesive bandages in different sizes and shapes
  • Adhesive tape
  • Emergency Numbers and Family Information Card
  • CPR breathing barriers for giving rescue breaths
  • Roller gauze bandages
  • Safety scissors
  • Sterile gauze pads
  • Tweezers
  • Two pairs of disposable non-latex gloves
  • Zipper-lock plastic bags (for ice packs)

Babysitters who do not have their own first aid kit should ask where the family's first aid kit is when interviewing the parents.

And they should also ask to see the kit so that they can make sure it contains the supplies listed above.

400

TRUE OR FALSE

Toddlers can be picky eaters, so you should force them to eat what you serve them?

Sitters should ask the parents their children's likes and dislikes, and you can offer them a choice from those foods.

If toddlers don't want to finish their food, there's no need to force them. Small healthy snack throughout the day will satisfy their energy needs.

400

TRUE OR FALSE

If you are babysitting at a house with a pool, and you need to run inside to get the crying baby. It is ok to go real quick because the other kids know how to swim?

FALSE

Children can drown rather easily in any depth of water. Drowning can occur in a bathtub, bucket, or even a toilet bowl.

So, children should never be left alone near any water. Bathroom doors should be closed at all times and toilet lids should be placed down as well.

For homes with a swimming pool, all gates and doors leading to the pool area must be locked when the pool isn't in use.

Children should not be allowed near the pool unless it's swim time and the sitter can easily access the children at all times inside and outside of the pool.

500

How much should you charge per hour to baby sit 1 child?

1. $15 - $20

2. $8 - $11

500

TRUE OR FALSE

When bathing a child, you should never leave the room. Bathing requires constant supervision.

TRUE

Bathing toddlers requires constant supervision because they could easily drown. This includes when the tub is filling up with water and when it's draining.

The water only needs to come up to the toddler's hips, and should be warm -- not hot. The temperature can be tested on the wrist or elbow before the child enters the tub.
