What is a protagonist?
The part of the story where the tension and conflict build and increase
What is the RISING ACTION?
The style of writing where you support your claim with evidence and reasoning.

a figure of speech comparing two mostly unlike things that share one trait in common using "like" or "as"
What is a simile?
The academic term for the "problem" in a story
What is conflict?
The character or force who opposes the main character of a story.
What is an antagonist?
The part of the story where the protagonist works toward resolving their conflict.
What is the FALLING ACTION?
The kind of writing where you write creatively and tell a story that teaches something or relates to your reader.

figurative language where words are used to describe what a sound actually sounds like (examples: BOOM! BANG!)
What is onomatopoeia?
The reading strategy where you pause and try to guess what is going to happen next in the story.
What is "PREDICT"?
A "side character" in a story who changes throughout the story, changing their personality, behavior, or showing growth in some way.
What is a dynamic character?
The end of the story that reveals either how the conflict was resolved OR how the basic situation from the beginning of the story has changed.

The first sentence of a paragraph in informational writing that tells the reader what that paragraph will be about. (HINT: NOT a claim)

giving human qualities or actions to non-human things
What is personification?
The academic term for the life lesson the author wants their reader to learn from the story.

What is a THEME?
A "side character" who stays the same throughout the story and does not grow or change
What is a static character?
The part of the story where the protagonist has a turning point and a realization about how to solve their problem.
What is the climax of a story?
A grammar error where a writer smushes together two (or more!) sentences into one sentence without adding needed punctuation or conjunctions.
What is a RUN-ON sentence?
a type of figurative language where a letter or sound is repeated multiple times within one sentnece (ex: The dog dove deep into the creek, drinking dirty water.)
What is alliteration?
A word part that comes BEFORE the root word and changes its meaning.
What is a PREFIX?
A character in a story who has some similarities with the main character (same age, same school, etc) but has a personality or qualities that contrast with the protagonist (opposites!)
What is a foil character?
The beginning of the story where the reader is introduced to the main characters, the setting, and the basic situation.
