What should a resident and RA relationship look like? What does an inappropriate relationship look like? Describe in full.

There should NEVER be a time where your relationship with your residents compromises your ability to do your job in an equitable way. If your relationship with a resident is clouding your ability to make sound judgment, this is a problem. Residents should respect you as an authority figure above anything else. Set boundaries early and maintain them. You cannot continue as an RA if you show favoritism and cannot make sound, equitable decisions.

Inappropriate relationship: talking about resident/issues with other residents, drinking with residents, allowing certain residents to get away with prohibited conduct/behavior...etc.

Describe duty in its entirety. Think about the following questions….

  • What time does duty start?

  • What are duty teams and duty blocks? Who is primary and secondary?

  • What are your typical duties while on duty?

  • When are rounds and RA Office hours?

There are four teams in Hepburn; basement, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor teams. Your teammate is your floor partner. Each Team will have a week long duty block once a month. There will be a primary and secondary RA in duty. In the event that the primary RA on duty needs back up, you will consult your secondary first. Duty begins at 8:00pm and goes until 7:00am. At 8:00pm, Jabber should be activated so that you are in tune with any calls that come through. Rounds are performed at 8:00pm, 10:00pm, and 12:00pm from Sunday - Wednesday. An additional 2:00pm round is added on the weekends spanning from Thursday - Saturday. Typical duties include interacting with residents, reporting hall damages, updating duty boards, checking bathrooms/exterior doors for safety purposes, sorting and distributing mail, and  taking down old fliers. Incident Reports should be filled out as needed. RA Office Hours are from 9-10 pm on Sunday-Wednesday, and 11 pm to 1 am on Thursday-Saturday. What are office hours designed for?
