When the Civil War began, Jarvis’ mother asked her club members to take a neutral stand in the conflict and help soldiers from both sides take care of their families. After the war, in 1868, she organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day”, an event that brought together mothers from both the Confederate and Union sides to promote peace and reconciliation. Despite authorities thinking it would erupt in violence, it was a great success and was held for several years afterwards.

The pattern is chronological/time order. The writer provides details and events using a time sequence: Jarvis’ mother’s hard work during “the Civil War”, the peaceful event she organized after the war “in 1868”, and finally the success of the event “for several years afterwards”.

A few hours before her little boy and girl died in a fire she set, Nimisha Tiwari, the mother, brought them to a store and bought the toys later found near their bodies: a Dora the Explorer doll and a Thomas the Tank Engine toy. Shortly before that, Nimisha took the children with her in the family minivan to buy the gasoline she used to ignite the fatal blaze. That is the picture sketched by police before the mother set her house ablaze, killing herself, her daughter and her son. All three were found on the same bed in the master bedroom of their locked Naperville home.

“that” refers to the act of buying dolls from a store.

6 App-based learning carries a few inherent advantages. It is convenient: you have your smartphone by your side at all times, fully-charged and ready to guide you through the maze of contemporary life, from the gentle tap of the snooze in the morning to the emoji-peppered goodnight-message you compose for a loved one in the evening.

7 Furthermore, an online product can be constantly improved and updated as it simplifies the distinction between product and service. A Babbel learner’s progress is measured, and stages within courses which prove to be difficult are adjusted in order to ensure that information is conveyed as effectively as possible. Yes, all that German grammar may sometimes seem complicated, and yes, some of those French words do not look anything like they sound, but that is exactly where Babbel comes in handy: it prides itself on making the complicated simple.

The thematic relation between Paragraphs 6 and 7 is one of addition. Paragraph 6 presents one of the advantages of app-based learning which is its suitability or convenience to learners who can learn anywhere as long as they have their smartphones charged and connected. Paragraph 7 adds another advantage of app-based learning: online applications are always updated and developed to ensure that users get the best leaning outcome. The transition “Furthermore” in the beginning of Paragraph 7 serves to show this “addition” relation between the two paragraphs.

What is good about shining technology if it steals our jobs and tears communities apart? The new machine age will change our understanding of work. Work is the way we contribute to society, a part of a social contract that holds our society together. We work, we build our society, and we benefit from its improvement and wealth. However, how will humans work or become rich in a world of robots?

The type if rhetorical questions. First, the introduction presents the selection’s main idea about the negative impact technology has on human jobs and society. Second, it provides background information about the topic under discussion: meaning of work (what humans contribute to society and

the contract they have with it) and the negative effects of technology (stealing human jobs, tearing communities apart, and preventing humans from working or becoming rich). Third, it attracts the readers’ attention through the facts provided about the meaning of work and the negative impact of technology

1 Among communication technology, international business dealings and cheap flights, commuter romances are the latest trend of modern Europe.

11 To sum up, such situations may make any married couple become strangers with time. This could trigger a mix of learning about and remembering one another. It could also be joy and fearat the same time. Both could be nervous, yet effective communication could be another key.

It’s a problem-solution relation. The writer in the introduction highlights a current trend of life in Europe, commuter marriage where its outcomes become problematic as discussed throughout the selection. To overcome these problems the writer in the concluding paragraph provides a recommendation/solution which is “effective communication”.

Authorities believe Nimisha gathered her children Saturday afternoon in the second-floor master bedroom of their home, in the 1900 block of Nutmeg Lane, part of Naperville's Cinnamon Creek subdivision. Then she locked the front door, poured gasoline on the hallway floor outside the room, and doused the bedroom floor as well. She might have splashed her own body with gasoline before igniting the blaze, for a lighter was found on her body.

The organizational pattern used is chronological order. The writer lists the steps taken by Nimisha to set the fire in time sequence: gathering the children, locking the door, pouring gasoline, and using a lighter to ignite the fire. The transitions/words that show this pattern: “Saturday afternoon”, “Then”, and “before”.

In little white coffins, they were carried to a place dotted with teddy bears and faded pinwheels spinning in the breeze. Vardaan Tiwari, 4, and his sister, Ananya Tiwari, just 18 months old, were buried among hundreds of other children in the "Heavenly Angels" section of Oakridge Glen Oaks Cemetery in Hillside. A granite statue of a mother cradling an infant tells visitors they are in a special part of the cemetery.

There is a mood of melancholy, sadness and horror. The choice of words reveals such mood: “white coffins”, “faded pinwheels”, “buried”, “Heavenly Angels”, and “Cemetery”. In addition, the image of the mother’s statue cradling an infant adds to the mentioned mood.

When she was pregnant, Peggy Young, a former driver at United Parcel Service (UPS), requested a change to her workload, as her doctor advised. The company refused and put her on unpaid leave, citing her inability to lift the 32 kilograms required of her in the job description. Despite complications in her pregnancy, Peggy took her case to the court. She sued UPS for discriminatory practices against her. The court decided in Young’s favor on the grounds that UPS, which makes special adjustments for employees with specific health conditions, needed to make similar ones for pregnant women that enable them to continue working.

The introduction is an anecdote/real-life example of Peggy Young who was subjected to discrimination by her company because of her pregnancy. First, the introduction attracts readers’ attention by giving a real-life example about the topic of discrimination against women in the workplace. Second, it introduces the selection’s topic about the different discriminatory practices against working mothers and pregnant women. Third, it helps the writer achieve credibility through the use of a real-life example about the discriminatory practices working mothers, like Peggy Young, encounter.

7- Claire Tyler – who chairs the Values-Based Child and Adolescent Mental Health System Commission –agreed, “Technology is moving on at such a pace that many parents really do not feel very well equipped to know what is going on and how best to support their children.”

8 - Lady Tyler explained, “If there were more specialist expertise in schools, schools would be very well advised to pass some of that to parents in simple ways – tips on how to help manage their child’s use of social media and what the pitfalls are.” She added, “For me what is particularly important to get across is a balance between screen time, physical activity, sleep and all sorts of things that contribute to overallwellbeing.”

The thematic relation is problem-solution. In Paragraph 7, the writer presents the problem which is the inability of adults to follow the fast pace of technology and its development. Then in Paragraph 8, he suggests to hire experienced people in schools in order to deal with the problems of social media and to support the children.

Climate-related catastrophes are caused by extreme weather events that may exacerbate natural disasters, such as tropical storms and windstorms. These may include extreme heat waves and lack of precipitation that can lead to drought, wild fires and famine. Also, extremely high levels of precipitation can cause flooding and mudslides. Climate change may lead to conditions in which health pandemics are more rapidly transmitted. Every year, af estimated 231 million people worldwide are affected by natural disasters and climate-related catastrophes.

The pattern of organization is cause-effect. The writer refers to the effects of the extreme weather events and then explains the conditions caused by climate change.
