American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr is attributed as the author of “The Serenity Prayer.” It was adopted by AA when a member saw the prayer printed in an obituary and brought it to a meeting in 1941. Niebuhr wrote the prayer by borrowing 3 verses from the Bible, one from the Book of James and two from this Book.

Philippians

“Do not be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Philippians 4:11).

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17).
