What sickness did Jospeph have as a kid?
Joseph suffered a severe leg infection after contracting typhoid fever. Doctors considered amputation, but his mother, Lucy Mack Smith, insisted on a less extreme treatment. Joseph underwent a painful surgery without anesthesia, leaving him with a limp for much of his life.
