How was it discovered?

The 2nd thing was gold.

1st nations who lived along the Fraser river had been mining gold to 100s of years. When they came to the Hudson's Bay trading post they traded in gold. Word got out and many people flooded to BC.

How did Laurier settle it?

At first the west was populated by French speaking settlers and the schools were French speaking. English newcomers arrived and the French became the minority. 

The government only wanted one school system and it would be English. French language would only be taught 1 hour/day.

Where is Barkerville and why was it important?

It was a supply town for the goldfields in the BC central interior. The gold rush lasted about 3 years. During that time it was the largest city north of San Francisco and west of Chicago.

In 1868 it burned to the ground.
