Math Talk
CPA
Authentic Task
100

What part of the lesson in Math talk? when do you do it?

Math talk comes as a Spark and is executed at the beginning of the lesson

100

What type is this? and why?

36 Doughnuts/3 boxes = 12 donughts per box

Number of Donughts on a number line.

Visual, As the concrete is now represented visually

100

In an Authentic task you do what before what? and why?

Explore before Explain.

Because: There are multiple ways of solving and representing a problem.

200

Why do we do Math Talk?

- Confident Mathematical thinking

- Persevere while solving complex problems

- Increases confidence and belief in self

200

What do you use to Execute CPA? Give a few examples of each.

Manipulatives:

Concrete-

:: Dal and grains

:: Matchsticks

:: Tangrams

:: Ganitmala

:: Base 10 blocks/sheets

:: Marbles

:: Magnets

Pictorial-

:: Icons

:: Photos and pictures

:: Representative symbols

Abstract-

:: Numbers

:: Mathematical symbols

:: Words

What is an Authentic Task?

Authentic tasks

Tasks which are open ended tasks which enable students to use different representations and solutions to communicate their understanding

300

What are the Different steps in a Math talk?

Set Norms

Present the problem

Engage with the problem

Students share their thinking

Teacher represents thinking on the board

What are the definition of C, P and A?

Concrete: Concrete is the “doing” stage. During this stage, students use concrete objects to model problems.

Pictorial: Pictorial is the “seeing” stage. Here, visual representations of concrete objects are used to model problems

Abstract: Abstract is the “symbolic” stage, where children use abstract symbols to model problems

AN OPEN METAL BUCKET IS IN THE SHAPE OF A FRUSTUM OF A CONE, MOUNTED ON A HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL BASE MADE OF THE SAME METALLIC SHEET. THE DIAMETERS OF THE TWO CIRCULAR ENDS OF THE BUCKET ARE 45cm AND 25cm, THE TOTAL VERTICAL HEIGHT OF THE BUCKET IS 40cm AND THAT OF THE CYLDINRICAL BASE IS 6cm. FIND THE AREA OF THE METALLIC SHEET USED TO MAKE THE BUCKET, WHERE WE DO NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE HANDLE OF THE BUCKET. ALSO, FIND THE VOLUME OF WATER THE BUCKET CAN HOLD.

Is this an Authentic Task? why? If yes, what criteria of an Authentic task are coming alive?

:: Purposeful, engaging and generates interest in students to solve it

:: Enables problem solving by making connections to real life problems.

::Has multiple ways of solving and representing it leading to same outcome/ answer

::

Builds on what students know.

Pre-requisite knowledge is not required
