Explain who influenced Josquin De Prez, starting with Dufay.

After Dufay, the most influential composers were Ockeghem and Busnoys, who continued the use of the forms-fixes (especially Rondeau) and frequent thirds and sixths. They differ because of: more frequent use of duple meter, further expansion of range, increased imitation and equality in the voices.

After them, we can consider Jacob Obrecht (1457/8-1505) and Heinrich Issac (1450-1517) as the Renaissance composers who move their ideas forward. Important differences include:

  • Obrecht and Issac traveled WIDELY. Ockeghem basically stayed in the same court in France most of his life.

  • Obrecht and Issac are known for combining northern and southern elements (low countries and Italy).

The serious tone, focus on structure, intricate polyphony, rhythmic variety (Northern qualities) combined with:  flowing melismatic melodies, lighter mood, homophonic textures, and dancelike rhythms (southern qualities).

  • Obrecht known most for his masses

  • Issac known most for his chansons
