Why did Hashem take him on a three day trip to the mountain?
So that Avraham would have time to think and nobody could say he was caught up in the moment.

Avraham davened that the koban of the ram should be "as if" he sacrificed his son

To this day, we can call upon the merit of the Akedah to get forgiven from Hashem.
