Multiculturalism is when different cultures are learning together in a classroom with mutual respect. They are able to accept diversity, the understanding that each individual is unique and has different struggles.

What is explicit instruction?
Explicit instruction is structured, sequenced and usually consists of just the teacher talking
Most consider this lecture or teacher demonstration
What is classroom management?
A variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task and academically productive during class

What are some examples of diversity within the class?
-Disability, some kids have a physical or mental impairment that limits them from certain activities
-Academic learning needs, some kids current knowledge is not enough to complete the tasks they should be able to in their grade
-Linguistic needs, some kids need the material in both their primary language and secondary language (Spanish and English)
-Personal characteristics, these include gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation
What components do you need to include in effective lesson plans (Utah High Quality Instructional (HQI)?
-Goal and Outcomes, have a success criteria for teacher and students to know if they have met their learning intentions
-Planning instruction, show have multiple means of engagement, be personalized and help all types of students
-Instruction, opportunities to read, write, speak. Should also have multiple opportunities to show mastery over time
Assessment, should be a formative assessment (a ongoing evaluation of student learning that is administered multiple times during a lesson)
Data and Reflection, analyze and reflect with the students for next time
Adapt instruction, provide appropriate interventions and feedback
What is the Universal Design of Learning (UDL) and how does it differ from explicit instruction?
UDL instruction is tailored instruction to meet individual needs
UDL focuses on engagement, representation and action and expression and is more individual based than explicit instruction

Classroom culture: creating a environment where students feel safe and supported
Consistency: sticking to the same principles, course, etc, helps students have a routine
Planning: the process of being prepared
Procedures: Established/ official way of doing something

What are lesson plans, scope and sequence and unit of study and how are they important in your class?
Lesson plan, these are your plans for all of your lessons, help you be prepared
Scope and sequence: A map to outline the strands and standards and how they are going to all be taught throughout the year
Unit of study, a structured block of learning focused on a single topic or theme
What is cooperative instruction?
Cooperative instruction is where students learn from each other and learn how to communicate with their peers (interpersonal skills)
Examples of this are jigsaw, pair share, and peer review
What are these 3 other classroom management strategies: Proximity, rapport and rules?
Proximity: Nearness in space, time or relationship
Rapport: A close relationship between the student and teacher, they understand each other's feelings and communicate well
Rules:Explicit regulations governing what to do within a learning enviroment
What is a philosophy of education?
-Set of beliefs and personal beliefs about the purpose of education and how they want students to learn
What is socio economic status?
There are 3 levels within socio-economic status (high, middle, low), families can fall within any of these 3 based on income, education and occupation
Should HQI cycle be applied to all areas/ lessons?
Yes, this includes arts, humanities, language arts, social studies, and stem
What is inquiry-based instruction and how can different questions manifest learning differently?
Inquiry based instruction is when the teacher guides the students through a driving question (project based learning)
Depending on the question asked (open vs. closed, levels of Blooms (why,what,how) and etc) learning and development can differ
What are norms and how do they differ from rules or procedures?
Norms are a set of co-developed standards for engaging in productive classroom discussions
These are different from rules or procedures that are set in place by the teacher for their classroom
Why is a philosophy of education important in education?
-It answers the question of "Why I want to become a educator"
-And it helps to show where you can grow and reach your teaching goals
Can different cultural backgrounds/ ethnic backgrounds affect student performance?
YES! There is so many factors that can contribute to this including:
-Family finances, if kids do not have enough food, clothing, etc it can affect how well their brain works at school
-Family structure, some kids may not have parents to help them with hw
-Educational expectations, what they have been taught about education by teacher and family
-Sibling care, can they always go to school?
How can we check that out lesson plans were effective?
By answering these 4 questions and applying it to our class:
• What do we want all students to know and be able to do?
• How will we know if they learn it?
• How will we respond when some students do not learn?
• How will we extend the learning for students who are already proficient?
