In this case, they sequenced the dire wolf genome, then identified 14 genes that differ between the extinct animal and canids of today. They made 20 changes to the DNA of a gray wolf to create some physical traits of a dire wolf: bigger teeth, larger size, a wider head and white fur. Scientists placed the edited genes into domestic dog eggs, then implanted them into surrogate dog mothers.
