Poe offers his reader insight into [his process of] composition, however truthful it may be, in “The Philosophy of Composition.” Essentially, he explains that he builds the poem over a specific structure of his choosing (“The Philosophy of” 646). He believes that something even as simple as the length of the poem lends itself as a merit...Indeed, Poe’s approach seems to be the opposite of how a poet typically composes a poem; content is often prioritized over structure. Both must be present to create beauty.

This is perhaps why Poe remains popular in literary circles. Scholars such as Darlene Harbour Unrue try to classify Poe into neat boxes – as a Romantic, a Gothic, or even a Transcendentalist writer, and yet he does not fit (113-114). An exception must be made for Poe.
