What is Step Flashing?
A rectangular piece of metal bent in half at 90 degrees. These are installed overlapping one another and typically where a wall meets the sloping roof

What is an open valley
cutting the edge of both shingles in the valley to expose the W valley underneath.
What is negative overlap
When overlapping seems the material on the upper must overlap the material on the bottom to prevent water from entering behind the lower.
What is a hip
The portion where two roof slopes meet at an external or protruding angle
What is starter strip?
A thin strip of asphalt shingle used along the eaves and the gabled ends. It has tar to help the bottom most edge stick down to the roof without nails.
What is a bundle?

What is a closed valley
On the first slope the shingles are left running through the valley. On the second slope the shingles are cut flush in the valley
What is an Ice dam?
an accumulation of ice typically along the eaves, in the gutters, or in the valley of a roof. Caused by heat escaping from the home and melting snow on the roof.
What is the Facia?
Supporting edge of the roof, a transition between the roof and the siding. Think "the side of the roof that faces ya"

A rounded metal pipe with a lead cap to be fitted over pipes.

Where shingles from opposing sides of the valley overlap each other and weave together in the crease of the valley.
What is a chalk line?
Using string covered in chalk powder the crew is able to 'snap a line' across the entire roof to ensure straight and level installation.
What is the Soffit?
The Soffit it the finished underside of the eaves. Think "the soft underside" of the roof.
What is underlayment?
Vapor barrier used to provide protection to the decking. Typically Ice & Water, I&W, Tar Paper, Felt, Synthetic.
What is Gutter Apron?
Metal flashing bent under 90 degrees to cover the transition between roof and gutter.
What is a cricket?
A small section of roofing added on behind larger chimney's to prevent snow and water from building up. Also called a saddle
What is ridge cap?
Final row if shingles that covers the seem of the ridge.
What is the Gable
Triangular portion of siding at the end of the roof.
What is decking/ sheathing?
Sometimes 1X 4 or 1X 6

What is a square?

What is a dormer?
Small framed out section of the roof typically for windows of ornate venting. Also called a dog house. These can lead into either a room on the upper flour, the attic, or they are built directly on the roof decking.
What is dormer flashing?
A long piece of metal flashing bent to cover the transition where a vertical wall meets the sloping roof.
