Safe - once the ball touches the ground or fence it is no longer a ball "in flight"

A ground ball rolls down the first‑base line and clips the corner of first base, then rolls into foul territory where it is fielded

Fair ball!  Bases are part of fair territory.

During a pickle play defensive player is holding ball in throwing hand and tags runner with glove before runner dives into base.  Safe or out?

Safe - tag must be applied with ball in hand or glove to record an out.

200

Ground ball to SS is thrown to first and is caught by first baseman at the exact same time as the batter runners foot contacts first base.

Safe - a tie goes to the runner

200

Foul - balls in flight past 1st or 3rd base are determined by where the ball lands.

1 out.  Runner on first base is stealing on a 2 strike pitch.  Batter swings and misses on a pitch in the dirt which the catcher blocks.  What should the catcher do and why?

Throw to second to attempt to get runner out stealing.  Batter is out (1st base was occupied before play started).

300

Runner on first, batter hits soft line drive to first base that bounces once before first baseman catches it. The runner on 1st base stays on first base thinking line drive will be caught.  The first baseman tags the runner who is standing on first base and then steps on first base before the batter runner arrives.  Batter runner is out… what about runner who stayed on 1st base?

Runner who stayed on first is out, because he was forced to go to second and was tagged to record the out.  1st base is longer "safe" for a runner who is forced.

300

A bunted comes to rest directly on top of home plate.

Fair - home plate is located entirely within fair territory, as the foul lines extend from the back point of the plate and continue down the foul lines.

300

Runner stealing 3rd base with right handed batter up. Batter swings and stays in batters box in a normal swing follow through motion, catcher attempts to throw to 3rd base but hits batter instead.  What is the call?

Some coach somewhere looses his mind and yells interference!!  However... there is no call in this scenario - batter is entitled to batters box and did not interfere with catcher.  The catcher must avoid the batter in this scenario.

Bases loaded, one out. A ground ball is hit to third. The third baseman steps on third base and throws home. Catcher catches ball and steps on home plate but does not tag the runner.  Is runner safe or out?

Safe - run scores.  Runner coming from 3rd was no longer forced once out was recorded at 3rd base.

400

Runner on second base.  A soft line drive is hit up the middle – runner dives back to second base to tag up, he reaches the base, then the ball hits him (while on the base).  Is he safe or out or is this a dead ball  (and why)?

Out - bases are part of fair territory and when a baserunner is hit with a batted ball in fair territory (prior to the ball passing an infielder) the runner is out.  The ball is dead and the batter runner is awarded first base.

400

A slow roller stays on the ground between home and third. The third baseman stands entirely in fair territory, but reaches into foul territory and touches the ball.

Foul - determined by position of ball, not player

400

Runner on 3rd attempts to tag up and score on a shallow fly ball.  Catcher blocks the plate, runner slides into catcher and does not reach the plate, then the catcher catches the ball and tags runner.  What's the call?

Obstruction is called on the catcher and the runner is safe.  Defense cannot impede baserunner's path without baseball.

400

Runner on first base.  Hard ground ball to 1st baseman who fields it and steps on the base and throws to 2nd base very quickly.  Runner is less than halfway and turns to come back to first base, dives back and touches first base ahead of a return throw to 1st. Tag is applied to runner while he is clearly touching first base.

Safe - once 1st baseman touches first base to record the out on the batter runner, the base runner is NO LONGER FORCED to go to second and can attain either base safely

500

There is a popup in foul territory, the first baseman attempts to catch it, but the ball bounces off his glove and lands in fair territory.

Runners on first and third, two outs. The batter hits a weak grounder to first baseman. The first baseman charges, picks up ball and tags batter runner; however the runner from third touches home plate before the tag play.  Does the run score? Why or why not?

Run DOES NOT score.  batter runner was forced at first base; force outs can be attained by EITHER stepping on base or applying a tag prior to runner attaining base.
