Name that Rock
100

What is the name of the process where rocks slowly change into different types over millions of years?

What is the rock cycle?

100

What is the most recognizable feature of sedimentary rocks?

They have layers.

100

There are two types of igneous rocks, what are they?

Intrusive and extrusive.

100

What is an example of an extrusive igneous rock?

What is obsidian?

100

Name that rock!!!!! (Full Name)

Bonus point if you can name the most movies he is in!

Dwayne the Rock Johnson

Moana, Jumanji (1 and 2), Get Smart, The Tooth Fairy, The Game Plan, The Jungle Cruise.

200

What do you call a rock that is made from layers of sediments pressed and glued together?

What is a sedimentary rock?

200

What is the most recognizable feature of metamorphic rocks?

Wavy banded layers of mineral crystals.

200

What is the difference between erosion and weathering?

Weathering is what created sediments and erosion is where those sediments are moved by wind, water, or gravity.

200

What is an example of an intrusive igneous rock?

What is granite?

200

Name that rock!

Bonus point if you can name the specific type of rock.

Marble

Metamorphic rock

300

Write the definition of igneous rock?

A rock that forms when magma or lava cools and hardens, often forming crystals.

300

Where do sedimentary rocks form?

On top of the crust.

300

Describe how a sedimentary rock becomes metamorphic.

The sedimentary rock becomes trapped inside the crust, where it experience extreme heat and pressure which changes its composition without melting it. Now it is a metamorphic rock.

300

Share ALL facts about extrusive igneous rocks.

  • Form above Earth’s surface
  • Form from lava
  • Cool quickly
  • Have small crystals
  • Can look smooth or glassy
300

Name that Rock!

Bonus point for name the specific type of rock!

Obsidian

Extrusive igneous rock

400

Write the definition of metamorphic rock.

A rock that forms when existing rock is changed by heat and pressure inside Earth (without melting).

400

Where do metamorphic rocks form?

Inside the crust

400

How does an metamorphic rock become an igneous rock?

First the metamorphic rock would get stuck in the mantle making it melt which turns it into magma. Then either it will cool in the mantle making it an intrusive igneous rock or the magma would go on top of the crust becoming lava before it cools into an igneous rock.

400

Share ALL facts about intrusive igneous rocks.

  • Form below Earth’s surface
  • Form from magma
  • Cool slowly
  • Have large crystals
  • Usually have a rough/coarse texture
400

Name that rock!

Bonus point for naming the specific type of rock!

Granite

Intrusive igneous rock

500

Write the definition of cementation.

The process where minerals left behind from water glue sediments together to form rock.

500

Where do igneous rocks form?

They go under the crust and into the mantle but they can cool either under the crust or on top of the crust.

500

Describe how an igneous rock can turn into a sedimentary rock.

Igneous rock -> weathering -> sediments -> erosion -> deposition -> compaction -> cementation -> sedimentary rock.

500

What causes igneous rocks to have different textures? Explain your answer.

Cooling time causes different textures. Rocks that cool slowly have large crystals and a rough texture. Rocks that cool quickly have small crystals and a smoother texture.

500

Name that Rock!

(Bonus point for having the specific type of rock)

Pumice!

Extrusive igneous rock
