The Case for Later School Start Times

Imagine waking up in complete darkness, forcing yourself through a shower while still half-asleep, and arriving at school before your brain has fully booted up. For millions of American teenagers, this isn't imagination; it's their daily reality. We must demand that schools across the nation push back their start times to no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has declared early school start times a public health issue. During puberty, adolescents experience a biological shift in their internal clocks, making it physically difficult for them to fall asleep before 11 p.m. When the first bell rings at 7:30 a.m., these students are biologically incapable of having gotten adequate rest. We are essentially punishing teenagers for a condition they cannot control.

Critics argue that later start times create scheduling nightmares for parents and after-school activities. However, the districts that have made the change report that families adapt quickly. More importantly, what good are sports practices and club meetings if students are too exhausted to participate meaningfully? Our current system sacrifices students' health and academic potential for the sake of adult convenience.

The evidence is overwhelming. Schools that have shifted to later start times have seen attendance rates climb, academic performance improve, and rates of depression and anxiety plummet. Students report feeling more engaged, more alert, and more optimistic about their futures. These aren't just statistics; they represent thousands of young lives transformed.

Every day we delay this change, we fail our children. Every drowsy student represents lost potential. Every teenager struggling to stay awake in first period deserves better. It's time to stop making excuses and start making changes. Our students' futures depend on it.

This question has two parts. First, answer Part A. Then, answer Part B.

The Hidden Cost of Fast Fashion

The average American buys sixty-eight pieces of clothing per year, more than one item per week. This insatiable appetite for cheap, trendy garments comes with consequences that most consumers never consider when clicking "add to cart."

The fashion industry is responsible for ten percent of global carbon emissions, more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. Producing a single cotton T-shirt requires approximately 2,700 liters of water, enough for one person to drink for two and a half years. Meanwhile, synthetic fabrics shed microplastics with every wash, contaminating waterways and ultimately entering our food chain.

The human toll is equally troubling. Garment workers in developing countries often earn less than three dollars per day, laboring in unsafe conditions to meet Western demand for inexpensive clothing. The 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, which killed over 1,100 workers, exposed the dark underbelly of an industry built on exploitation.

Some consumers are pushing back through the "slow fashion" movement, which emphasizes quality over quantity, secondhand shopping, and clothing swaps. Major brands have begun responding with recycling programs and sustainability pledges, though critics argue these efforts amount to little more than greenwashing.

Ultimately, meaningful change requires consumers to reconsider their relationship with clothing altogether. Before purchasing that discounted dress or trendy jacket, perhaps the most important question to ask is not "Can I afford this?" but rather "What is the true cost?"

This question has two parts. First, answer Part A. Then, answer Part B.

C. "Before purchasing that discounted dress or trendy jacket, perhaps the most important question to ask is not 'Can I afford this?' but rather 'What is the true cost?'"

D. "Some consumers are pushing back through the 'slow fashion' movement."

Question 1 Part A: B - Cheap, trendy clothing carries hidden environmental and human costs that consumers should consider.

The passage focuses on the hidden negative impacts of fast fashion on the environment and workers.

Question 1 Part B: C - "Before purchasing...perhaps the most important question to ask is not 'Can I afford this?' but rather 'What is the true cost?'"

The introduction of smartphones has dramatically transformed how teenagers socialize. Because young people now have constant access to social media, face-to-face interactions have declined significantly. As a result, many teens report feeling more connected to online friends than to classmates they see daily.

This shift has led to both positive and negative consequences. On one hand, teens can maintain friendships across distances. However, studies show that excessive screen time has resulted in increased anxiety and reduced ability to read nonverbal cues. Consequently, schools are now teaching digital citizenship alongside traditional social skills.
