What are enzymes?
biological catalysts
What is the name of the main reaction type?
ester hydrolysis
Name the 4 macromolecules
Carbs, protein, lipids, nucleotides
Which experiment involved testing levels of CO2 and ethanol production?
cellular respiration
Zymogens are enzymes that must be activated by removing a portion of themselves before they function. Pepsinogen is one of the enzymes found in the stomach (becomes pepsin). What might cause this enzyme to break?
Acidic environments
I have 10mols of triglyceride and want to fully react it with NaOH. How many moles of NaOH do I need?
(recall mols are just a standard unit, looking for a ratio between triglycerides and NaOH)
30 mols TRI- glyceride
My DNA is falling apart. For some reason, the two strands are not linking together. Which part of my nucleotide is broken?
N-base either its wrong or broken
Here are some results from an agar plate
Bact Water nutrients growth?
y y n n
n n n n
y y y y
n y y y
can these results be trusted and why?
NO, there was growth in the water, something contaminated it
Uncompetitive inhibitors bind to an allosteric site on an enzyme after the substrate binds. What variable might this increase in the MM equation? (write eq on board)
Km (how tightly substrate binds)
what would happen if, instead of NaOH, we used HCl?
same thing! mech is slightly diff but works out the same
An enzyme, β-glucosidase, is introduced into a solution of D-galactopyranosyl-A-1,4-glucopyranoside. If I test this using a glucose strip, would I get a result?
NO, only cleave Beta bonds, NOT alpha
I am creating a mixture with an organic solvent (ex cyclohexane) and a NaOH mixture. When it is done, how can I go about separating these two mixtures while saving both of them? (Their BPs are within 10C from eachother
Separation funnels, they use density differences to allow the mixture to separate, and then only drain the funnel with the denser liquid.
For an experiment, I want to denature my enzyme to place it back into its primary structure to measure its length on an SDS-PAGE. What might I use if I know my enzyme lives in the stomach?
A base/high temp are both acceptable answers.
QUICK!! I accidentally added water over my NaOH. What should I do??
Leave the beaker alone, it's about to get REAL HOT and possibly explode
Tollens reagent is used to test for the reducing end of a sugar (carbon connected to 2 oxygens, that is, -OH), producing a silver mirror in its presence. If I introduce a sugar that is 1,1-connected, will it produce a silver mirror
NOPE
HELP! theres a new dye in clothing, staining my skin that has not come out no matter what I use!! its an oil based dye that simply wont come out when I wash my hands. How would you design a new soap to better tackle this problem (best answer wins!!)
- include something for mechanical action (plastic beads/wood etc)
- any new and chemically accurate way of removing oil (nonpolar solvents)
