The Saints: Friends of God in Heaven
The first Pope. His name was originally Simon, before Jesus changed it to "Cephas," meaning rock. His brother, Andrew, introduced him to Jesus.
Saint Peter
A sacred gold box in the center of the church. It holds the Eucharist.
Tabernacle
"I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other God's before me." (Put God in first place in your heart.)
The First Commandment
The first man and woman God created.
Adam and Eve
This sacrament washes away Original Sin and makes us new creations in Christ. The Holy Spirit comes to live in us; we become temples of the Holy Spirit and God's children.
The Sacrament of Baptism
Known for their great love of the Eucharist. This saint made a website promoting Eucharistic miracles. Liked soccer, Pokémon, coding, and Nutella!
Saint Carlo Acutis
A special candle (usually red) that is near the tabernacle or monstrance. When the candle is lit, Jesus is present.
Sanctuary Lamp
"You shall not bear false witness." (Be truthful; do not cheat, spread rumors, or trick others - use your words for good!)
The Eighth Commandment
His name means "drawn forth, taken out of the water." He was called to lead Israel out of Egypt. God spoke to him from a burning bush and, at another time, gave him the Ten Commandments. He parted the Red Sea.
Moses
In this sacrament, we tell our sins to Jesus through the priest. God forgives our sins, fills us with sanctifying grace, and helps us say yes to him and do what is right.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
This saint used the Eucharist in a monstrance to miraculously turn away invading soldiers from her convent! She was born into a wealthy family, but after hearing the Gospel preached by Saint Francis, she wanted to become a nun. She started a religious order of Franciscan nuns, and is the patron saint of TV.
Saint Clare of Assisi
The stand where the Bible is read during Mass.
Ambo
"You shall not covet your neighbor's goods." (Be thankful for what God has given you; do not be greedy or jealous of what others have or their abilities)
The Tenth Commandment
Their name means "father of many nations." God promised him that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky.
Abraham
This sacrament deepens the graces of Baptism. We receive a special outpouring and strengthening of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, which helps us grow to be strong Christians, share and defend the faith, and strengthen our bond with Christ and the Church.
The Sacrament of Confirmation
This saint became a Christian at the age of 19. Her name in Mohawk means "she who bumps into things." Her lifelong smallpox scars healed miraculously a few minutes after her death. Her last words were "Jesus, Mary, I love you!" She is the patron saint of the environment and Native Americans.
Saint Kateri Tekakwitha
A small gold plate that holds the hosts that become the Body of Christ at Mass. It can also be held under the chin during the distribution of Holy Communion.
Paten
"You shall not commit adultery." (Be pure in all you say, hear, think, and do.)
The Sixth Commandment
This disciple was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot as one of the Twelve Apostles. Their name means "gift of God."
Matthias
The sacrament through which a man is ordained to be a bishop, priest, or deacon through the laying on of hands and a prayer of consecration by a bishop. His ministry is to continue the mission Christ gave to the Apostles.
The Sacrament of Holy Orders
This saint miraculously healed a child with a fishbone stuck in their throat. In February, priests bless throats using two crossed candles, praying for this saint's intercession, as they are the patron saint of throat illnesses. Hint: Cape San Blas in Gulf County is named after this 4th-century physician and martyr.
Saint Blaise
Small glass containers that hold the water and wine used in the consecration of the Eucharist. This item is brought up during the Presentation of the Gifts before the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Cruet
"You shall not kill." (Life is a gift; respect every person)
The Fifth Commandment
This unfaithful prophet had his donkey talk back to him when he tried to go to the Israelites' camp in Moab to curse them.
Balaam
The priest anoints the person with blessed oil and lays his hands on them for healing, strength, peace, and courage. This sacrament also forgives sins only if the person is not able to go to Confession.
