if you live selfishly and are only willing to save/care about yourself and not think about others, you will lose your chance to live eternal life with Jesus and God.
Jesus doesn’t actually mean you should lose your life, He means to sacrifice your life and put God, Jesus, their teachings (the scriptures) and others first. To live selflessly. When you live selflessly, you save your eternal life.

Why must we deny ourselves and take up our crosses in order to follow Jesus?
to be able to follow Jesus, we must put our selfish wants and needs aside and focus on Jesus' teachings (love and care for others)

The word “catholic” means to be open to the whole world. As children of God, we must welcome, accept, respect, and love everything that God has created. This is how we should live as children of God. Jesus wants His people, the Church, to welcome and to include people of all kinds, just as He does.
