Matter!
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Define Chemistry.
The study of matter!
What did Mendeleev contribute to chemistry?
The first periodic table!
The heaviest alkali metal.
Francium.
Frootloop (Ms.Wangler's cat)
Matter! Matters very much!
What are the two types of matter? Define them and give an example.
Pure substance- Cannot be broken down by physical means. Ex: Water
Mixture- Can be broken down into smaller parts by physical means. Ex: dirt
Define atomic mass.
The weight of an atom of an element measured in atomic mass units or Daltons.
How did Mendeleev organize the periodic table?
By increasing atomic mass.
A noble gas with a mass of approximately 40.
Krypton
Air
Matter!
What are the two types of pure substances? Define them and give an example.
Element- Cannot be broken down by physical or chemical means. Ex: Hydrogen
Compound- Cannot be broken down by physical means but can be broken down by chemical means. Ex: Water
Define atomic number.
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of a specific element.
How to Moseley fix Mendeleev's periodic table?
By organizing by atomic number instead of atomic mass?
An element in group 8 and period 5.
Ruthenium
Not matter!
What are the two types of mixtures? Define them and give an example.
Homogenous- Cannot see the separate parts of the mixture. Ex: Air
Heterogenous- Can see the separate parts of the mixture. Ex: Dirt
When something new is formed through the re-arrangement of bonds to either form new compounds or break them apart.
Compare and contrast: Noble gases and halogens.
Noble gases are all odourless, colourless gases that are the least reactive of all elements.
Halogens are highly reactive non-metals that are normally found in nature as a part of compounds.
An element in period 7 with an atomic number of 98.
Californium.
Sound
Not Matter!
What is the difference between a physical and chemical property? Give 2 examples of each.
Physical- Can be observed without changing the chemical identity of matter.
Examples- State of matter, colour, texture, viscosity, malleability, etc.
Chemical- Can only be observed during a chemical reaction.
Examples- Flammability, production of a gas, reactivity with oxygen or acids, lack of reactivity, etc.
Define synthetic element.
An element that can only be made in the lab.
How did organizing by atomic number fix the periodic table?
It pushed elements into the correct columns (groups) so that all elements were in a family that shared similar physical and chemical properties with them.
The most abundant element in the universe.
Hydrogen.
