When did Indigenous Peoples occupy the land that is now known as Canada?
10,000 years ago
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. It is made of small particles, known as atoms. It can be presented in different states such as:
- Solids
- Liquids
- Gas
What is psychology?
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. This includes how humans think, feel, and behave.
What is a Rover?
A rover is a small, mobile robot that scientists send to the moons and planets to land on their surfaces and explore for information.
What is Aerodynamics?
Aerodynamics is the study of the motion of air and how it interacts with moving objects
What is Indigenous Sciences?
Indigenous science is about Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge from generation to generation about the environment and ecosystems that have led to survival.
It includes multiple systems of knowledge(s) such as the knowledge of plants, the weather, animal behavior and patterns, birds, and water among others.
Compare substances and mixtures
A chemical substance is composed of one type of atom or molecule.
Mixtures are substances that consist of combinations of two or more pure substances, or different particles.
What is a psychological assessment?
The gathering and integrating of psychological data for psychological evaluation through tests, interviews, case studies, behavioural observations and specially designed measurement procedures.
Compare a satellite and space telescope
- Satellites help us study the Earth
- Telescopes help us observe distant objects in space
What are the four Principles of Aerodynamics (4 forces of flight)?
- Lift
- Weight
- Thrust
- Drag
What is Aspirin?
Aspirin is a common painkiller, widely used to reduce aches and pains such as headaches and toothaches, treat colds and flu-like symptoms and bring down a fever.
Explain a chemical reaction?
A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances are converted to one or more different substances, the products.
Mixing substances can result in a chemical reaction, which produces new substances.
During the Asch test, why did 75% of the participants give the wrong answer to the 3 lines test?
Participants "conformed" to the wrong answer because the social influence caused them to change their behaviour.
Conformity is the tendency to align your attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours with those around you.
What are Rovers tasked to do?
Rovers help scientist learn about faraway places without having to send people to space. They:
- Take pictures
- Collect information about the planet by taking temperature readings, rock, and soil samples
- Send this information back to scientist on earth through radio signals
Where do birds and airplanes get their thrust?
- Birds obtain thrust by using their strong muscles and flapping their wings.
- Airplanes get their thrust from propellers and/or jet engines
Explain Indigenous Peoples' involvement in discovering Aspirin
Native Americans are known to have chewed the willow bark or boiled leaves from the willow tree to treat pain and fever.
Salicylic acid – was discovered thousands of years earlier in the form of willow bark.
What are evidences of a chemical reaction?
- Colour change
- Energy change - heat, light, sound
- Odour change
- Formation of a gas
- Formation of a precipitate
Why do people see "The Dress" in different colours?
Colour Constancy is the ability for our brain to perceive colours.
Your brain tries to interpolate a kind of colour context for the image, and then spits out an answer for the colour of the dress.
Compare a Rover and a car
Rovers are built to withstand high levels of acceleration, high and low temperatures, pressure, and more. They are able to roam around on Mars, collect information about the train and are autonomous.
Cars are built for speed and durability on Earth. They don't collect information and focus more on moving things and keeping them safe.
What happens to a paper airplane when you add weight to the front of the plane?
The plane will fall short quicker because the weight pulls the plane towards gravity.
Compare Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Western Sciences?
Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) includes studying interactions with the natural surroundings, such as knowledge of plants, animals and natural events.
Western science is objective and quantitative as opposed to traditional knowledge, which is mainly subjective and qualitative.
What happens when baking soda and vinegar mix together?
When the baking soda and vinegar combine, it produces a chemical reaction which causes a gas called carbon dioxide to bubble and foam.
The gas having nowhere else to go expands the balloon making it inflate.
What factors increase conformity?
- Group size
- Difficulty of the task
- Status of the majority group
- Ambiguity of the situation
How did you use the Engineering Design Process to improve your Rovers?
Identify the problem: Wheel is not turning
Brainstorm: Build thicker wheels
Design: Design the new wheels
Build, Test, Redesign: Test the wheels & redesign
Share solutions: Did it help?
Explain how birds' and airplanes' wings provide lift?
Airplane and bird wings are curved on top and flatter on the bottom. That shape makes air flow over the top faster than under the bottom. So, less air pressure is on top of the wing.
