EOP Definition

Technology that is used to reduce pollutants and waste at the end of a process.

It is estimated that shipping is responsible for between 2 and 3 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (UNIMO) has set targets for shipping companies to reduce their current emissions by at least 50 percent by 2050. In response to this requirement, designers are working on clean technologies to power large ships. Rotor sails made from carbon glass fibre are one example of a clean technology. Rotor sails were first developed in the 1920s but interest in them was not revived until the early 21st century,

Outline one driver for using clean technology to develop the rotor sail.

international/government legislation/target;
aimed at reducing global emissions from shipping;

reduce fuel/energy consumption;
conserving natural resources/to be more cost-effective;

Drivers for Clean Technology

300

System Level Solution

Refers to solutions that require systems to change not just singular portions or steps.Usually Regulatory in manner.

Explain why end-of-pipe technologies may not be the most effective strategy to reduce pollution.

end-of pipe technologies only focus on reducing pollutants at the end of a process ✓
however pollutants may still be released during the production process

strategies (system level solutions) that capture the pollutants earlier in the production process can result in less pollutants being emitted overall

end-of pipe technologies only focus on reducing pollutants at the end of a process different types of pollutants can be released during the manufacturing process that may not be addressed/eliminated with one single solution

List 3 Social Drivers

Consumer groups, public pressure, and public perception could influence a company to implement clean technologies.

Radical Vs. Incremental (3 Points for each)

Radical:Existing technology can be use-Minimal changes to current systems-Low Risk-Easily and efficiently responds to new legislation-Improves competitiveness-Small changes need to happen consistently-Low potential for market growth

Incremental: More opportunities to innovate the market, fewer competitors)-High potential for market growth-No innovations drive new technologies-High Risk-Research and Development are costly and time-consuming

400

List two reasons why polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is often used for food packaging.

lightweight;

low cost/cheap;

easily shaped/moulded;

non toxic/food safe;

widely available;

recyclable;

waterproof/non absorbent;

4 Response types

Passive:Ignoring Pollution with no effort toward waste management

Reactive:Dilution and dispersion of Pollution. Does not stop pollution, just spreads it out more widely

Constructive:End of pipe treatment: minimization of the release of a pollutant

Proactive:Cleaner production overall. Treatment of pollutants during entire system
