mood
The feeling of not knowing what is going to happen next in a story.
suspense
An object or trend of significance to a person or group.
artifact
The use of magical elements within an otherwise "realist" piece of literature.
magical realism
A category of writing characterized by a particular style, form, or content.
genre
The person or character who tells a story to the reader.
narrator
The feeling produced by a conflict or problem that has not yet been solved.
tension
The feeling of belonging and attachment one has with a group or culture.
cultural identity
The willingness to enter a work of fiction prepared to accept the narrative as truth.
suspension of disbelief
The basic structure of plot as outlined by German novelist and critic Gustav Freytag (1816 – 1895).

pacing
The particular combination of diction, tone, and language used to tell a story. Voice includes dialogue spoken by characters as well as narrated information.
voice
Something that represents an idea that lies beyond the literal reading of the text.
symbol
Based on an individual's emotions, feelings, or perceptions.
subjective
The perspective from which the narrator is telling the story.
point of view
The time, place, and social environment in which a story takes place.
setting
Hints or suggestions that tell you what is going to happen in a story.
