Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, Accountability (for example, DEI, JEDI, IDEA) has become a buzzword in organizations, with agencies emphasizing DEI work. However, most of the time this could be performative. What are five concrete ways that organizations can implement DEI/JEDI/IDEA principles into their work culture for long-standing change?

  • Pay: Paying people for the work they are doing, consistent raises, bonuses when applicable, paying people extra if asking to do outside of role duties. 

  • Hiring practices: hiring staff who reflect the community that you’re serving on ALL levels of the organization, not just line staff. This includes, middle management, upper management, executives, CEO, Board of Directors.

  • Policies: mandatory annual/fiscal trainings that are enforced by an entity, whether a training department or DEI manager who has access to information from all staff from the agency on their attendance of diversity trainings.

  • Culture of agency: feedback loop of providing feedback to higher ups; opportunities to engage regularly with upper management to discuss concerns, agency culture, etc; having intentional healing conversations and inviting folks to assist with that from outside the agency when microaggressions / racism occurs… not just treating it as an HR issue.
