Hazard / Risk
Hazard: A condition with the potential to cause personal injury or death, property damage, or mission degradation
Risk: An expression of possible loss in terms of severity and probability
Alternate Requirements
Alternate required for less than 3000-3 during the period of 1 hour before ETA unitl 1 hour after ETA
Supplemental Oxygen

10k-13k = Crew, other occupants 3 hr limit
13k-FL250 = everyone
Above FL250 = prohibited in unpressurized aircraft
Max recommended caffine intake
450 mg per day
Instrument approach and landing minimum
Tiltrotor vis mins may be reduced to 1/2 the published vis min for Cat A aircraft, but in no case may it be reduced to less than 1/4 mile or 1,200 ft RVR. Not exceeding 90 kts on final approach. Ceiling mins shall not be reduced, COPTER approach ceiling and vis minimum shall not be reduced.
Operational Necessity
A mission associated with war or peacetime operations in which the consequences of an action justify accepting the risk of loss of aircraft and crew
Fuel Planing: No alt, alt, in-flight refueling
No alt: t/o to destination, plus a reserve of 10% of planned fuel req
Alt: t/o to approach fix serving destination, thence to alternate plus a reserve of 10% of planned fuel req.
In no case shall the planned fuel reserve after final landing be less than that needed for 20 min of flight at planned flight alt.
In-flight refueling: Shall carry sufficient usable fuel to fly from t/o to ARCP, thence to a suitable recovery field in the event of an unsuccessful refueling attempt. In no case shall the fuel reserve at the rendezvous point be less than 10%.
Anti-exposure suit
Shall be provided when in the event of a mishpa there would be a significant risk of water entry and when either of the following two conditions prevail:
- water temp in planned flight area is 50F or below
- OAT on the surface in the planned flight area is 32F or below
Commanding officer or OIC of the aviation unit bears the responsibility to mandatthe wear of continuous wear ant-exposure suits using ORM.
Grounding time period for Dental procedures involving local injectable drugs (e.g. Novocaine)
12 hours
When does flight begin?
For helicopters, a flight begins when the aircraft lifts from a rest point or commences ground taxi and ends after airborne flight when the rotors are disengaged or the aircraft has been stationary for 5 min with rotors engaged.
For recording and reporting purposes, a flight begins when the aircraft first moves forward on its takeoof run or takes off vertically from rest at any point of support and ends when the aircraft is on the surface and either: (a) the engines are stopped or the aircraft has been on the surface for 5 min, whichever comes first, (b) a change is madein the PIC
SPC Watch / Warnings
SPC Watch Notifications: Issued for areas where conditions are favorable for development of severe weather
SPC Warnings: Issued by National Weather Service Forecast Offices where these conditions are actually occurring
Takeoff minimums
Special inst rating - no celing or vis min. Takeoff shall depend on judgement of pilot and urgency of flight.
Standard inst rating - Pub mins for the available non-precision approach, but not less than 300/1. When a precision approach compativle with installed and operable aircraft equipment is available, takeoff is authorized provided the weather is at least equal to the precision approach min for the landing runwat in use, but in no case when the weather is less than 200 1/2 2,400 rvr.
Crew Rest
Crew rest is the non-duty time before a duty day, watch, or flight period. Crew rest included free time for meals, transportation, rest and shall include an opportunity for 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep for every 24-hour period. Flight crew shall not be scheduled for.... flight duty in excess of 18 hours. However, if it becomes operationally necessary to exceed the 18-hour rule, 15 hours of continuous off-duty time shall be provided prior to scheduling the member for any duties. Crew rest can be reduced to less than 12 hours in order to maintain a 24-hour work/rest schedule, but... shall always include an opportunity for 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
When is a LPV considered a precision approach?
When DA is less than 300' AGL
Tiltrotor pax overwater launches / recoveries at night
Ship launches and recoveries shall be made during daylight hours. May be waived by Strike Group Commander, Amphib Squadron Commander, MAGTF, Commander or Officer in Tactical Command in cases of operational necessity.
PIC
The pilot in command is responsible for the safe, orderly flight of the aircraft and well-being of the crew.
Inst rating currency
Within 6 months of inst evaluation: 6 hours actual/sim inst time. 12 approaches (6 precision, 6 nonprecision)
Within 12 months of inst evaluation: 12 hours act/sim inst time. 18 approaches, 12 shall be precision and 6 nonprecision.
Flight sims may be utilized to meet one-half of the min inst rating requirements
Fiscal year minimum flying hours
Pilot time = 40 semiannual, 100 annual
Night time = 6 semiannual, 12 annual
Instrument time = 6 semiannual, 12 annual
When can we purchase aircraft fuel from other than military or government contract sources?
- Mission requirement dictated stopping at a facility without military or contract fuel sources
- Flight terminated as the result of an emergency
- The flight terminated at an alternate airport in lieu of filed destination
When can we land at other than airfield locations?
Tiltrotor VSTOL/STOL landings outside of airfields are authorized provided:
1. Military requirement exists for such landings
2. Adequate safeguards are taken to permit safe landing and takeoff operations without hazard to people or property
3. There are no legal objections to landing at such nonairfield sites
Oceanic
A situation where an acraft has no radio communication and is greater than 250 nm from the nearest navaid
What do you need for a two-plane formation to takeoff into instrument conditions? Is it authorized?
Authorized provided the weather is at or above the published circling minimums for the runway in use. In the event a circling approach is not authorized, ceiling and visibility must be at least, 1000/3
How long can a instrument rating be extended for? Who can extend it? In what case can it be extended?
Commanding officers may extend the expiration date of instrument ratings that would otherwise expire during the period of a long deployment or within 90 days of return. The expiration date for the extension shall not be longer than 90 days after return from deployment.
Blood donation hazard, interval, downings
Blood donated in small quantities is quickly replaced and does not adversely affect ground ops, the hazard of hypoxia and reduced barometric pressured makes it desireable to limit such donations.
- min interval shall be 4 months
- flight personnel in combat, flying in a shipboard environment, or flying operational missions shall not donate blood within 4 weeks prior to such flying
- flight personnel shall not participate in flight duties or perform low-pressure chamber runs for 4 days following donation of 450 cc of blood (1 pint)
- if subject to flying duties within 4 days of blood donation, an aviator must obtain command approval prior to donating
