A student says, "What’s the different between the Wildlife Management and Wildlife-Fisheries?"
Wildlife Management is an area of study in our Forestry major toward becoming a Registered Forester. Our Wildlife, Fisheries & Aquaculture program is for students wanting to study wildlife and fisheries and become a Wildlife Biologist.
A student says, "I want to study African Wildlife."
How fun! We have faculty members who research a variety of different species and have connections around the world.
A parent says, “Is Mississippi safe?”
I have never felt in danger in Starkville, MS. We have campus police and blue lights across campus to ensure, help is very close by.
A student says, “I don’t know what major I applied to.”
That's okay. I know selecting a major on the application can be confusing. Let's visit Chloe after our tour to get that figured out. OR I can let our Admissions Coordinator, Chloe, know and she can let you know what your major is currently. If you need it to be changed, she can help you with that process.
A parent says, "Will my child make any money in this field?"
Of course! There is a large salary range in the wildlife biology field for careers public and private sectors.
A parent says, “I just hate that y’all cut down the trees.”
For some ecosystems, it is a healthy cycle to cut timber and create spaces for other species to thrive. Also, we are not leaving ecosystems bare. In sustainable forestry, we replant 25 tree for every tree cut.
A parent says, “If my daughter is quiet, it’s because her dad is here. She didn’t want him here. We’re divorced.”
Oh. I come from a divorced family, so I understand the dynamic.
A parent says, “Can you tell me how we can get into Forestry-Pre-Vet?”
Our Wildlife Veterinary Medicine concentration is the best fit for students wanting to go to vet school and/or go into clinic care for exotic species.
A student says, “I can’t just drive to the Aquaculture Center? Well, Auburn’s Aquaculture Facility has a Welcome Center.”
Our aquaculture facility is more than just for commercial practice. We work heavily in fisheries conservation, so some of the equipment and samples need to be maintained in a controlled setting with limited access.
A parent says, “Why should we care about endangered species? Isn’t that a part of natural selection?”
While natural selection is a natural occurrence, it is also brought about by human influence. If humans are responsible for animal population decline, it is our obligation to correct our wrong doing to maintain balance in that ecosystem.
What would you do if the parent is answering all the questions for the student and disagreeing with the student’s expressed interests? “What my son means to say is…”
Redirect the response to the student to make them feel included and continue to ask the student questions. If there is another ambassador, have one ambassador with the parent and one with the student.
A student says, “What is the scholarship deadline for Freshman?” “If I’ve missed the deadline, can I still apply?”
The scholarship deadline was Dec. 1. Please, go ahead and submit your application for other MSU and departmental scholarships.
A parent says, “My daughter has a full ride to Georgia Southern.”
Congratulations! MSU offers great scholarships to our students. As an R1 Research Institute, we have access and facilities that give our students competitive and unique opportunities to be highly marketable candidates in the workforce.
A student says, “I don’t really care about conservation. I just like to hunt.”
I love to hunt, too! Conservation ensures we can continue to hunt for many years to come, and hopefully, take our kids hunting.
A parent says, “I don’t want to send my kid to school to be indoctrinated into liberal ideas.”
Everything we teach in the College of Forest Resources has years of research supporting the ideas regarding animal health, land management, and timbe production.
A student says, “I’m transferring from Northwest Community College, and Lanna said I’m still going to be considered a freshman.”
I'm happy to hear you've decided to transfer to MSU. I'm sorry to hear your community college was not able to fulfill your degree requirements. Lanna and Alicia can help you get back on track and make sure you are taking the necessary classes to graduate.
