How many steps are in the Engineering Design process? (Double points if you can name them.)
1. Ask
2. Imagine
3. Plan
4. Create
5. Improve
6. Present
What does CAD stand for?
Computer-Aided Design
True or False? A prototype should be a quick model of the design that is proposed.
True
How many child clients did we review before deciding on which child client to design a therapeutic toy for?
6 child clients.
What does a a CAD (Computer Aided Design) Modeler do?
A CAD (Computer-Aided Design) Modeler creates, modifies, and optimizes 2D and 3D technical drawings, blueprints, and digital prototypes using software like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Fusion 360. They work in engineering, manufacturing, and architecture to convert concepts into precise, manufacturable, and functional designs while ensuring compliance with technical standards.
Identify the actions you would take in the "Imagine" step of the Engineering Design Process.
1. Brainstorm possible solutions
2. Be creative and generate as many ideas as possible.
3. Conduct additional research if necessary
4. Encourage open-mindedness
True or False? Accuracy is important when designing for 3D Printing.
True
What was the client's condition in the Ankle Foot Orthosis?
Cerebral Palsy
Describe the "Imagine" step of the Engineering Design Process during the Therapeutic Toy project.
-Given list of existing toys that could be modified
-Individual brainstorm to modify an existing toy
-group brainstorm to come up with new toy ideas.
What does an engineer do?
An engineer is a person who designs, builds, or maintains machines, structures, or systems.
What does it mean that the Engineer Design Process is and iterative process?
That it involves repeated cycles of the process.
When is your project ready to print? Give at least 2 descriptions.
Project is flat on the work plane (nothing floating)
One continuous project
Correct dimensions/size
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral Palsy is caused by a brain injury before, during, or shortly after birth that affects muscle movement, posture, and coordination. It is not contagious and does not get worse over time. People with CP may use wheelchairs or braces, walk differently, or need extra time for tasks.
What was the goal of the Therapeutic Toy project?
To understand needs of child client and their therapeutic goals and create a toy in which can help them meet their therapeutic goal.
Explain what an Orthotist does.
An Orthotist is a medical professional who helps patients that require external devices to support their bodies.
Describe what the "Improve" step may look like.
In the improve step, you would make changes and improve your design to better solve the problem.
If changes are made, you would test the solution.
What are some of the advantages of 3D printing? Identify at least 2.
The five key advantages of 3D printing include rapid prototyping & faster time-to-market, allowing quick design iterations; design freedom & complexity, enabling intricate parts not possible with traditional methods; customization, for personalized products with no extra tooling cost; reduced waste & sustainability, by using only necessary material; and on-demand production, minimizing inventory and storage needs.
Talk through the engineering design process and how we applied it in the Ankle Foot Orthosis project.
Answers may very.
Describe how Create and Improve looked like in your Therapeutic Toy project.
Answers may vary.
What does an Occupational Therapist do?
Occupational therapist help people across their lifespan—from infants to the elderly—develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and working skills needed to live independently. They treat individuals with physical, mental, or cognitive disabilities by creating customized treatment plans, modifying environments, and using adaptive equipment to improve daily function.
A student makes a blueprint for a solar-powered car. They draw a detailed design, think about what materials to use, and write down the step by step process of building the car.
"Plan" step
True or False? 3D Printing will replace traditional manufacturing.
False. : 3D printing is a complementary tool that replaces inefficient, traditional, or outdated methods, but it will not completely replace conventional manufacturing, which is still better for mass production.
What were some of the design requirements for the Ankle Foot Orthosis? List at least 2.
It attaches to the patient's foot and lower leg.
It places the foot flat on the floor when standing.
It supports the foot and ankle, including the heel and arch of the foot.
It is comfortable for the patient to wear.
It is removable.
It prevents the patient from poining or rosing up onto their toes.
It allows upward movement at the ankle, where the foot of toes move in an upward direction toward the shin or front of the leg.
Which career closely aligns with the profession that helps the child clients in this project?
Occupational Therapists
What does a data scientist do?
A data scientist is a professional who organizes large quantities of data in different ways, seeking meaningful insights in the data. Data scientists are people who like numbers and information—lots of it! That data may include the number of Likes on social media pages, daily banking transactions, census records, or locations of seasonal flu outbreaks around the world. There can be thousands, millions, or billions of data points in a dataset. The data may consist of measurements, currency, GPS locations, words, names, counts, and other types.
