Jose read this problem:

Tabitha has 8 boxes of crayon.  Each box has 9 crayons in it.  Her sister gave her 48 more crayons.  How many crayons does Tabitha have now?

Jose wrote the equation 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 = ___ to represent the problem.  When he solved that equation, he determined that Tabitha has 72 crayons.  Is Jose correct?  Explain why or why not in the text box below.

Part of Jose's equation is correct, however Jose final answer is NOT CORRECT because he forgot to include 48 more crayons his sister gave him.

8+8+8+8+8+8+8+8+8=72 crayons

72 + 48 = 120 crayons

Jennings went to the store to get cupcakes for his class.  He bought 4 packages with 6 cupcakes in each package.  If there were 18 people in his class on the day Jennings gave the cupcakes out, did he have enough cupcakes?  If so, how many extra cupcakes did he have?  If not, how many more cupcakes did he need?  Explain your mathematical thinking.

Yes, Jennings had enough cupcakes to share with 18 people, because he purchased 4 packages of 6 cupcakes. When I solved the problem I used multiplication because 4 packages of 6 cupcakes in each package equals 24 cupcakes.
